It can cause health complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, dental disease, nerve damage and foot problems. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So explains Dr.<mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"> Ricardo Correa M\u00e1rquez<\/mark>, a member of the Department of Endocrinology at <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Cleveland Clinic<\/mark>, who details the consequences, causes and factors that influence the disease.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prevent it, the endocrinologist advises maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating a good diet, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says the symptoms of diabetes include intense thirst, frequent urination (needing to urinate more than 7 times), extreme hunger, unexplained weight loss, ketones in the urine, fatigue, irritability, blurred vision, slow-healing sores and frequent infections.  &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Factors that can cause the disease include being overweight, leading a sedentary lifestyle, having a family history of diabetes, being over 45, high blood pressure and belonging to certain races,&#8221; says Dr. Correa. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He notes that medications to control diabetes include insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, meglitinides, thiazolidinediones, DPP-4 inhibitors, GLP-1 agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors and amylin analogues. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which foods affect blood sugar levels and how can they be controlled?<\/strong><strong>  <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the specialist, these are foods containing <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">carbohydrates, fats and proteins<\/mark>. However, blood sugar levels can be controlled by eating healthy fats, consuming lean proteins and eating small, balanced meals throughout the day.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carbohydrates are the main source of glucose, a type of sugar the body uses for energy. <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Foods high in carbohydrates include bread, pasta, rice, fruit and sweets.  <\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;These foods can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels, especially if eaten in large quantities. To control blood sugar levels, it is important to count carbohydrates and choose complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, pulses and vegetables, over simple carbohydrates such as white bread and sugary snacks,&#8221; says Correa M\u00e1rquez.  &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He states that fats do not directly affect blood sugar levels and can slow the absorption of carbohydrates, thus preventing sudden spikes in blood sugar.  &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Healthy fats, such as those found in avocados, nuts and olive oil, can help keep blood sugar levels stable. However, unhealthy fats, such as trans fats and saturated fats, can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease,&#8221; he says. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He adds that proteins do not significantly affect blood sugar levels either, but they do help you feel full, which can prevent overeating and so help control blood sugar.  &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Lean proteins, such as chicken, fish and tofu, are healthier options.&#8221; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the endocrinologist advises keeping a regular sleep schedule, as irregular sleep patterns can disrupt the body&#8217;s ability to regulate blood sugar.  &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Cleveland Clinic<\/strong> &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>&nbsp;is a nonprofit multispecialty academic medical centre that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education.
