However, more than half (52%) plan to apply for new credit or refinance existing credit in the next 12 months.

This is according to TransUnion’s latest Consumer Pulse survey of Dominican consumers in the fourth quarter of 2024, in which 59% of respondents cited inflation as their main financial concern, followed by employment (52%) and housing prices (50%).

More than half (52%) of Dominicans said they expected to be unable to pay at least one of their current debts in full. Of these, almost a quarter (24%) of respondents said they would use their savings to meet their commitments, while 21% planned to borrow from a friend or relative to pay their debts.

Another notable finding of the study is that 53% of consumers believe their credit score would increase if lenders considered non-traditional information or alternative data, such as rent payments, alongside other regular transactions. Including alternative data would give even more information to Dominicans who monitor their credit scores: almost eight in ten Dominicans surveyed believed monitoring their credit score is at least moderately important, with 42% saying they check their credit score at least once a month. Millennials (80%)[1] were the most likely to believe monitoring credit is at least moderately important; however, Generation Z had the highest percentage (50%) of respondents who checked their credit reports at least monthly.

In terms of access, in the fourth quarter of 2024, 96% of Dominican consumers believed access to credit was important for achieving their financial goals, but only 29% of all respondents believed they had sufficient access (down seven percentage points compared with the fourth quarter of 2023). Only 20% of Generation Z consumers reported having sufficient access to credit, the lowest percentage of any generation.

“Dominicans faced significant financial pressure during 2024, but the local economy is showing promising signs of growth and stability, supported by strong tourism and foreign investment. As the economy continues to grow, consumers are likely to

experience more liquidity and prosperity in the coming months,” said Virginia Olivella, Senior Director of Research and Consulting at TransUnion in the Dominican Republic.

Incomes are improving, but caution in spending persists

During the fourth quarter, most (72%) Dominican consumers were optimistic about their household finances over the next 12 months, with only 11% pessimistic. Generation X was the most optimistic (77%), and 69% expected their income to increase over the next 12 months. However, potentially because of macroeconomic dynamics, a large percentage (52%) of consumers said they had cut back on discretionary spending (eating out, travel, entertainment) in the past three months.

Some of the consumer optimism may have arisen because a third (33%) of respondents (6 percentage points more than the previous quarter) said their household income had increased over the previous three months, and 80% of consumers surveyed said they expected their income to rise over the next year. However, 29% said their income had stayed the same, and 38% said it had fallen. Falls in income were most reported among Baby Boomers (50%) and Generation X (46%).

A need for greater awareness of fraud, identity theft and other scams

Another notable topic in TransUnion’s Consumer Pulse is digital fraud. In the fourth quarter of 2024, 24% of consumers said they had been targeted by fraud attempts online, by email, phone calls or text messages in the past three months, but did not fall victim. However, 12% (3 percentage points more than the previous quarter) were targeted by fraud and fell victim.

Baby Boomers were the largest group of victims, with 60% having been scammed, while 42% of high-income households said they had been targeted by fraud or victimised in the past three months.

The most common scams were money and gift card scams (26% of reported incidents) and third-party seller scams on legitimate online marketplaces (25%), followed by stolen credit cards or fraudulent charges and vishing (fraudulent phone calls designed to trick people into revealing their details), both at 23%.

About Consumer Pulse

TransUnion’s quarterly survey, conducted online by third-party research provider Dynata among consumers aged 18 and over in the Dominican Republic, explores how consumers’ personal finances have changed and what changes are expected in the future. The study measures changes in consumers’ outlook and behaviour based on income, debt and identity theft dynamics. The analysis and insights give consumers a voice and guide decision-making for institutions as they seek to create economic opportunities for consumers. Some percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding or because multiple answers were accepted.

About TransUnion

TransUnion is a global information and insights company with more than 13,000 associates operating in more than 30 countries, including the Dominican Republic.
