{"id":12594,"date":"2025-06-23T14:16:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T18:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/bad-cholesterol-cut-almost-in-half-in-patients-with-heart-conditions-using-combination-therapy-with-a-new-drug\/"},"modified":"2026-09-22T18:07:40","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T22:07:40","slug":"bad-cholesterol-cut-almost-in-half-in-patients-with-heart-conditions-using-combination-therapy-with-a-new-drug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/press-room\/bad-cholesterol-cut-almost-in-half-in-patients-with-heart-conditions-using-combination-therapy-with-a-new-drug\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Bad&#8221; cholesterol cut almost in half in patients with heart conditions using combination therapy with a new drug"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Low-density lipoprotein is a type of cholesterol that can build up in the artery walls, forming plaques that cause atherosclerosis.<\/em> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wednesday 14 May 2025, Cleveland:<\/strong>  Recent findings by Cleveland Clinic physicians show that combining a new drug, obicetrapib, with a widely used medicine, ezetimibe, reduced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels by 48.6% after about three months, producing more effective results than either drug alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results of the phase 3 clinical trial have just been presented at a scientific session during the annual meeting of the European Atherosclerosis Society in Glasgow, Scotland, and were published simultaneously in <em>The Lancet.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excessive LDL cholesterol (often called &#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol) can lead to atherosclerotic disease, the build-up of plaque in the artery walls, which increases the risk of heart attack or stroke. Patients who have it, or who are at high risk of developing it, can reduce the likelihood of adverse events by lowering their LDL cholesterol levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Despite statin therapy and other non-statin medications, many patients at high risk of heart disease, or who already have heart disease, do not reach their LDL cholesterol goals,&#8221; says Ashish Sarraju, M.D., lead author and preventive cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic. &#8220;This combination therapy helps high-risk patients who need extra help lowering their cholesterol and increases their chances of reaching their goals.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many factors can lead to high LDL levels, such as a poor diet, being overweight, smoking or getting older. However, other factors, such as genetics, cannot be changed. For some people, lifestyle changes can help, but many others need to take medication. Some even need multiple lipid-lowering therapies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this multicentre clinical trial, researchers studied 407 patients with LDL cholesterol levels above 70 mg\/dL despite receiving maximum lipid-lowering therapy, which included statins in almost all cases. They were randomly assigned to treatment with the fixed-dose combination of obicetrapib and ezetimibe, either therapy alone, or a matching placebo. After 84 days of treatment, the fixed-dose therapy lowered LDL cholesterol by 48.6% compared with placebo alone, while obicetrapib monotherapy lowered LDL cholesterol by 31.7% compared with placebo. Overall, all treatments were well tolerated. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;These results support the potential of using this fixed-dose combination to help treat a patient population that is often difficult to treat,&#8221; said Dr. Steven Nissen, senior author and chief academic officer of Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Heart, Vascular &amp; Thoracic Institute. &#8220;If approved by regulators, this could allow high-risk patients who need additional LDL cholesterol lowering to increase their chances of reaching their goals.&#8221;&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>The trial was funded by NewAmsterdam Pharma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Nissen has consulted for numerous pharmaceutical companies and has overseen clinical trials for organisations such as Amgen, AbbVie, AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Mineralys, NewAmsterdam Pharma, Eli Lilly and Company and Novartis.
