Today, that sense of distance has been shattered. More and more young people are receiving this diagnosis when they least expect it, in the middle of work, family and plans for the future. That is why understanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneralbrigham.org\/en\/patient-care\/services-and-specialties\/cancer\/colorectal-cancer-screening\">how colorectal cancer begins<\/a> is a priority for moving towards early and timely detection.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Colon-Mass-General-2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11202\" style=\"width:358px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Colon-Mass-General-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Colon-Mass-General-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Colon-Mass-General-2-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Colon-Mass-General-2-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Colon-Mass-General-2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against this backdrop, every 31 March, when World Colon Cancer Day is observed, becomes an urgent call to pay attention. The Dominican Republic ranks third in the world for incidence, with around 1,800 new cases each year, according to the Global Cancer Observatory. For its part, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates that by 2040 new cases of colorectal cancer worldwide will rise considerably, reaching 3.2 million a year, while deaths could reach 1.6 million annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today more than ever, information and timely detection can make the difference between a late diagnosis and a life saved. As Dr. Aparna Parikh, medical director of the Young Adult Colorectal Cancer Center at the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, points out: &#8220;Colorectal cancer is largely preventable and, in most cases, curable, especially if it is detected early.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is colorectal cancer and how does it develop?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding what colorectal cancer is and how it develops helps us grasp its impact on health. It is a disease that develops in the large intestine, specifically in the colon or rectum, and affects the normal functioning of the digestive system. &#8220;It is characterised by the presence of malignant cells that grow in the colon or rectum,&#8221; explains Dr. Parikh. She adds that &#8220;this cancer often begins as polyps (benign growths), which are not cancerous but can turn into cancer over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its development is linked to changes in genetic material (DNA), known as mutations. Although the exact cause of these changes is often unknown, some of them can be inherited and increase the risk of developing the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the risk increases with age, more and more young adults are now being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, even without a clear family history or earlier warning signs. The reasons are not yet entirely clear. According to the Mass General Brigham specialist, &#8220;it is an active area of research why this trend is appearing in younger patients.&#8221; She explains that &#8220;there are many hypotheses related to dietary or environmental exposures in early childhood, along with weight changes, among other factors.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Factors that can increase the risk of colorectal cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colorectal cancer can affect anyone, but we do not all start from the same point. There are conditions, histories and habits that can increase the likelihood of developing it, even without our being fully aware of it. Knowing these factors can help us identify risks and make more informed decisions about our health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneralbrigham.org\/en\/about\/newsroom\/articles\/family-health-history\">family or personal history<\/a> of colorectal cancer or a genetic syndrome. In fact, up to 30% of all diagnoses occur in patients with a family history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having a history of adenomas. Adenomas are colorectal polyps that look abnormal under a microscope or measure 1 centimetre or more. They can sometimes turn into cancer over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having chronic ulcerative colitis or Crohn&#8217;s disease for 8 years or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smoking cigarettes. Tobacco use is an addiction that affects health and increases the risk of various diseases, including cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drinking three or more alcoholic drinks a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having obesity. Your doctor can calculate your body mass index (BMI) using a formula based on height and weight. If your BMI is over 30, you have obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to recognise the signs and act in time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But how does colorectal cancer begin? The most common symptoms include abdominal discomfort or cramps, blood in the stool or bleeding from the rectum, and changes in the shape, colour or frequency of bowel movements. There may also be episodes of diarrhoea or constipation, a feeling that the bowel has not emptied completely, increased gas or weight loss with no apparent cause. It is important to bear in mind that these symptoms are not always related to the disease and may be due to other conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Precisely because the symptoms can be confusing, mild or even absent in the early stages, early detection of colorectal cancer plays a key role. <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.brighamandwomens.org\/spanish\/TestsProcedures\/Gastroenterology\/92,P09217\">Colonoscopies can detect cancer<\/a> even before symptoms appear or while the disease is not yet advanced, and that can make a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When should you have a preventive colonoscopy? General recommendations indicate that, if you have a family history of colorectal cancer, the first colonoscopy should be done at 40 or 10 years before the age at which a first-degree relative was diagnosed. For everyone else, screening usually begins at 45, even if there are no symptoms. &#8220;As an oncologist who mainly treats young patients, my inclination is to screen at younger ages,&#8221; says the specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, Dr. Parikh suggests certain actions that can help reduce the chances, such as eating healthy foods, including plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains; limiting red meat; exercising regularly; limiting or avoiding alcohol; maintaining a healthy weight; and quitting smoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/cancer-center\/treatments-and-services\/gastrointestinal-cancers\/colorectal-cancer\">approach to colorectal cancer in young adults<\/a> has evolved towards comprehensive, personalised models of care that take into account not only the medical characteristics of the disease but also the life needs specific to this stage. Depending on each case, treatment may include colorectal surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and even access to clinical trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is clear: to offer treatment plans tailored to each person, combining scientific rigour with a humane, coordinated approach, and giving patients better chances of controlling the disease and recovering.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many of us believed that colorectal cancer was something that happened &#8220;to other people&#8221;, usually older people.
