The findings show that financial concerns, inconsistent use of preventive care and limited access to clear, reliable information are shaping health decisions at every stage of women&#8217;s lives. For many women, these challenges are not theoretical: they are shaping real decisions about when and how to seek care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on a survey of 2,000 women aged 18 and over, the report reveals that, although many are taking steps to look after their health, several challenges continue to affect how and when they seek care. Almost half of women (45%) say their biggest concern as they age is not having enough money to take care of their health, a higher figure than those who cite developing serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease or Alzheimer&#8217;s disease as their greatest fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This report makes one thing clear: women&#8217;s health is in crisis, with persistent and serious gaps in how women understand and manage their health throughout their lives,&#8221; said Maria Shriver, founder of Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s <em>Women&#8217;s Alzheimer&#8217;s Movement<\/em> (WAM) and co-founder of Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s <em>Women&#8217;s Comprehensive Health and Research Center<\/em>. &#8220;Too many women need clear information about their health risks, and too many are unsure whether they can afford the care they need. By addressing these gaps in knowledge, access and affordability, we have a significant opportunity to improve health outcomes for women and their families.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Financial pressures influence women&#8217;s health decisions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost half of women (45%) rate their financial situation as fair or poor, highlighting how concerns about healthcare and insurance costs can influence decisions about when and how to attend routine appointments and, in some cases, lead to care being delayed or avoided. These pressures are often greater for women who care for others without pay, who report higher levels of stress (53% vs 46%), fatigue (49% vs 42%) and guilt about prioritising their own health (34% vs 21%) compared with non-caregivers, reflecting how financial hardship and caregiving responsibilities together can affect the way women manage their health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Women&#8217;s preventive care varies across life stages<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While younger women say they are more likely to see a women&#8217;s health specialist, women aged 60 and over are more likely to talk openly about sexual health. Almost half of Gen Z women and women born between 1981 and 1996 (Millennials) said they had seen a gynaecologist or women&#8217;s health specialist in the past year, compared with 23% of women aged 60 and over. Comfort in discussing sexual health with a gynaecologist increases with age, rising from 36% among Gen Z women to 70% among women aged 60 and over. These differences also reflect how each generation engages with health information, underlining the need for clearer, more accessible and reliable guidance tailored to women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Closing the knowledge gap in women&#8217;s health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lack of awareness continues to shape how women perceive health risks and approach healthcare, often influenced by misconceptions about when and why care is needed at different stages of life. More than two in five women (42%) do not know that menopause can affect the heart, brain and bones, and more than half (52%) say it is not talked about enough, highlighting the need for earlier and more practical information. Awareness of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease is also limited: only 19% of women know they are at greater risk, even though they account for almost two-thirds of cases, and only 29% express concern; however, those who are aware are more likely to take steps to protect their cognitive health, underlining the strong connection between knowledge and action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, the findings show that, although many women are motivated to take charge of their health, they often do so while dealing with financial pressures, caregiving responsibilities and a lack of clear, reliable healthcare information, highlighting the need to improve access to care, strengthen communication and support women at every stage of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Every day we hear from women who want to be proactive but are not always sure which steps matter most,&#8221; said Dr. Pelin Batur, medical director of Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s <em>Women&#8217;s Comprehensive Health and Research Center<\/em>. &#8220;Clear, consistent guidance (especially around prevention and life-stage changes) can help women of all generations manage their health with greater confidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report&#8217;s findings were presented at the <em>Global Women&#8217;s Health + WAM Forum<\/em>, which brought together clinicians, researchers and health advocates from across the country to discuss the implications of these findings for women nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Sharing this information in a room with so many people who care deeply about women&#8217;s health gives us the opportunity to think more clearly about what women need and how best to support them,&#8221; said Dr. Beri Ridgeway, co-founder of Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s <em>Women&#8217;s Comprehensive Health and Research Center <\/em>. &#8220;It is an important step in continuing to improve our approach to women&#8217;s health.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the forum, Dr. Ridgeway announced <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1FU1BdWhpi8\">two generous gifts in support<\/a> of the <em>Women&#8217;s Comprehensive Health and Research Center<\/em>, including the creation of a new endowed chair dedicated to bone health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the full report on the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/-\/scassets\/files\/org\/landing\/state-of-womens-health-report\">women&#8217;s health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recordings of highlighted sessions from the Global Women&#8217;s Health + WAM Forum will be available online later this month here: <a href=\"https:\/\/ccf.org\/WHForum\">ccf.org\/WHForum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About the report<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This report is based on a national survey of 2,000 women aged 18 and over, conducted between 11 and 19 March 2026 by Savanta, under the direction of Ketchum, on behalf of Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s <em>Women&#8217;s Comprehensive Health and Research Center<\/em>. The results are nationally representative by age and region.
