Cleveland Clinic is one of only a few centres in the world offering this surgical approach and was the first in Ohio to perform the procedure. Robotic lung transplants have been performed only rarely, as they require advanced robotic capabilities and a highly skilled surgical team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Gregory Jones, a thoracic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Heart, Vascular &amp; Thoracic Institute, led the surgical team for the single-lung transplant, which also included Dr. Kenneth McCurry, cardiothoracic surgeon, surgical director of lung transplantation and chief of transplantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This achievement reflects the collaboration and innovation of our transplant and surgical teams,&#8221; said Dr. McCurry. &#8220;As these technologies continue to evolve, they will play an increasingly important role in improving patient outcomes and advancing the future of transplantation. Our kidney and liver transplant programmes in Ohio have also been at the forefront of robotic organ transplantation, with great success.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a traditional lung transplant, surgeons usually access the chest by dividing the breastbone or making a large incision between the ribs to reach the lungs. This is often accompanied by considerable pain, which can prolong recovery. In a robotic lung transplant, surgeons use small incisions, robotic instruments and 3D visualisation to perform the operation with a less invasive approach. The procedure is designed to help reduce postoperative pain, shorten hospital stays and speed up rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This milestone is an important step forward in our approach to lung transplantation,&#8221; said Dr. Jones. &#8220;It builds on our experience in both robotic surgery and the care of transplant patients, and offers one more option for those who may benefit from a minimally invasive procedure.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robotic surgery has transformed many types of cardiothoracic procedures over the past decade. By applying this technology to lung transplantation, Cleveland Clinic is expanding access to advanced, minimally invasive care in transplantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operation was performed on a man in his seventies with pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive disease that causes scarring in the lungs and can make breathing increasingly difficult. After the transplant, the patient was discharged from hospital and is recovering well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Lung Transplant Program is a national leader in advanced care for these procedures, with more than 2,500 transplants performed since 1990. In 2025 alone, 146 of these procedures were performed at Cleveland Clinic in the United States. The programme stands out for its experience caring for complex transplant cases, many of which have been turned down at other centres, and for pioneering new approaches to this type of transplant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to its achievements in the United States, Cleveland Clinic is also a global leader in transplantation.
