This is according to the latest TransUnion Q2 2026 Consumer Pulse study, in which 40% of respondents said their financial situation was better than expected, eight percentage points (pp) higher than in the same period last year (32%).

Consumer expectations remained positive during the period analysed, although they eased slightly compared with the previous year. As a result, 74% said they felt optimistic about their household finances for the next 12 months (-1 pp year on year), while 79% expected their household income to increase over the next year (-2 pp compared with the same period in 2025).

The results also show that this improvement has not led to looser financial habits. On the contrary, consumers remain focused on reducing discretionary spending, paying off obligations faster and building emergency funds.

“We are seeing a more optimistic Dominican consumer with a better perception of their financial situation, but one who continues to manage their resources with discipline. Better economic expectations have not removed caution; on the contrary, we see people who keep carefully assessing their spending, strengthening their saving habits and making credit decisions more consciously,” said Danilda Almánzar, TransUnion manager in the Dominican Republic.

Households show greater confidence, but keep prudent financial habits

Although Dominicans’ financial expectations continue to improve, overall people are still taking steps to look after their personal finances.

The study highlights that 49% reduced discretionary spending on entertainment, travel or eating out, while 31% said they had accelerated payment of their financial obligations and 23% had built up their emergency savings.

In addition, 49% of respondents said they could struggle to meet at least one of their current financial obligations in full, and to deal with these difficulties they would turn to different strategies, including taking on temporary or gig work (42%), using savings (26%) and renegotiating payments (11%).

Credit remains key, although caution is growing

Access to credit remains fundamental to Dominicans’ economic confidence. 97% of consumers consider it important to have access to financing products in order to achieve their financial goals.

Even so, the intention to take on new financial obligations has moderated. Currently, 45% of consumers plan to apply for new credit or refinance existing credit over the next 12 months, 3 pp lower than a year ago. High costs continue to hold back access: 25% of respondents cited this as the reason they gave up, while application abandonment remained stable at 51%.

Among those planning to seek financing, personal loans remain the top preference (42%), followed by refinancing of existing personal loans (26%) and “buy now, pay later” services (18%), which recorded the strongest growth of all credit product categories.

“The results show that consumers continue to value access to credit as a fundamental tool for achieving their goals. However, they also reveal greater selectivity when taking on new obligations, reflecting a more responsible and conscious approach to managing their finances,” Almánzar added.

Fraud is rising and tactics are evolving

The proportion of consumers who said they had been victims of fraud rose to 13% (+3 pp compared with 2025), while 66% said they were not aware of having been targeted by fraud schemes (-2 pp compared with the second quarter of last year).

Third-party scams on legitimate online retail websites became the most common form of fraud across online channels, email, phone calls or text messages, at 29% (+3 pp year on year), followed by credit card theft (24%) and vishing (21%). Although levels of concern are showing some moderation, digital security risks remain a reality for consumers. This scenario reinforces the need for players in the digital ecosystem to strengthen protection measures, promote greater transparency and maintain timely and proactive communication about these types of threats.

Dominicans more committed to monitoring their credit

Another highlight of the study is the increased frequency of credit monitoring. 63% of respondents said they monitor their credit activity at least once a quarter, with improving their credit score (32%) and protecting themselves against possible fraud (32%) being the main reasons for checking their financial information.

This trend reflects consumers who are increasingly concerned about their financial health and about making informed decisions on the products and services they use.

About the study
The results come from the TransUnion Q2 2026 Consumer Pulse study, conducted between 29 April and 15 May 2026 among 309 adults living in the Dominican Republic.
