{"id":12648,"date":"2019-12-09T15:58:25","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T19:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/key-health-stakeholders-in-the-dominican-republic-discuss-the-right-approach-to-heart-failure\/"},"modified":"2019-12-09T15:58:25","modified_gmt":"2019-12-09T19:58:25","slug":"key-health-stakeholders-in-the-dominican-republic-discuss-the-right-approach-to-heart-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/press-room\/key-health-stakeholders-in-the-dominican-republic-discuss-the-right-approach-to-heart-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Key health stakeholders in the Dominican Republic discuss the right approach to heart failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em>1 in 5 people over the age of 40 could develop heart failure at some point in their lives.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Santo Domingo, November 2019.<\/strong> Officials from the Ministry of Public Health and the Hospital General Plaza de la Salud (HGPS), along with representatives of the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) and the Dominican Society of Cardiology (SODOCARDIO), took part in a scientific meeting to analyse the impact of heart failure in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting, held at the Embassy Suites hotel in Santo Domingo with the support of Novartis, was led by Dr Francisco Neftali V\u00e1zquez Bautista, Deputy Minister for Quality Assurance, representing the Minister of Public Health; Dr Fausto Warden Taveras, president of SODOCARDIO; and Dr Julio Amado Casta\u00f1os Guzm\u00e1n, rector of UNIBE. It was also attended by various stakeholders from the health system, professionals in the field and representatives of academia, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Participants agreed on the importance of building proposals and defining a roadmap aimed at bringing about changes in the health system that make it possible to meet patients&#8217; needs properly while ensuring the financial sustainability of the health system.<\/p>\n<p>Heart failure is a cardiovascular disease in which the heart does not pump the blood the body needs to carry out its normal functions, because it has become too weak or too stiff a muscle to do its job properly<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Julio A. Casta\u00f1os Guzm\u00e1n said: &#8220;The research carried out by UNIBE, the Hospital General Plaza de la Salud, SODOCARDIO and the Ministry of Public Health highlighted the impact of this condition on the Dominican population, an important factor showing that cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in our country, and it also shows the multiple factors present in Dominicans affected by heart failure. It also assesses lifestyle as a determining factor in managing patients.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The speakers addressed heart failure from different perspectives. Dr Robert Paulino, researcher and director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, presented the incidence and prevalence of heart failure and the burden it represents for the world, its health systems, patients and society as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide.<sup>4<\/sup> In particular, heart failure can be more dangerous than many types of cancer<sup>2<\/sup> and is one of the most frequent causes of hospitalisation in people over 65.<sup>5-6<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Dr Grisel Canahuate, a cardiologist at the Hospital General de la Plaza de la Salud, drawing on local clinical data from UNIBE&#8217;s burden of disease study, spoke about the state of this disease in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 million people worldwide currently live with this disease<sup>7 <\/sup>and it is estimated that more than 200,000 people in the Dominican Republic have it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For heart failure we need a sustainable, science-based policy that enables quality multidisciplinary care from prevention through to the most advanced stages,&#8221; said Dr Fausto Warden Taveras, president of SODOCARDIO.<\/p>\n<p>According to the American Heart Association, 1 in 5 people over the age of 40 could develop heart failure at some point in their lives<sup>1<\/sup>, so appropriate, timely treatment of this condition allows them to avoid or significantly reduce hospital admissions and live free of the main disabling symptoms, which often prevent patients from doing even the simplest everyday activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Novartis&#8217;s commitment to patients drives us to research and develop innovative treatments and to create forums like this one, where government officials, health professionals and other relevant stakeholders can discuss the best available options for tackling the country&#8217;s major public health challenges. The approach to heart failure is one of them, particularly because if it is not the right one, it can lead to high costs for the health system and for the patient&#8217;s quality of life,&#8221; said 760px\" \/>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><strong>STUDY SUMMARY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Introduction: Heart failure (HF) is a syndrome characterised by inadequate cardiac function and associated with disability. Its many causes and risk factors vary geographically, so the aim was to understand the clinical characteristics of HF in the Dominican Republic in order to suggest improvements in health services.<\/p>\n<p>Methods: 378 cases were randomly selected from a population of 2,119 cases of HF patients treated at a Dominican hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Results: The study showed an average age of 69. Several predominant risk factors were identified, such as high blood pressure (87.5%), ischaemic heart disease (50.4%), valve disease (40%) and diabetes mellitus (34.7%). Risk behaviours were also observed, mainly tobacco use (23.7%), obesity (17.4%) and alcohol consumption (7.8%). The most frequent symptom was shortness of breath (84.7%). The average ejection fraction was 48%. The most common treatment was diuretics.
