In addition, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic showed that the world needed rapid development of a vaccine that could be deployed globally. Thanks to previous research that laid the foundation for this technology, an effective COVID-19 vaccine was developed, produced, approved and deployed in less than a year. This landscape-changing technology has the potential to be used to tackle some of healthcare&#8217;s most challenging diseases quickly and efficiently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><a style=\"color: #008080\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rjTv8d4ZPSk\"><b>PSMA-targeted therapy in prostate cancer<\/b><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nEach year, <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">more than 200,000 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer<\/span>, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the United States. Accurate imaging is critical for tumour localisation, disease staging and detecting recurrence. PSMA, an antigen found at high levels on the surface of prostate cancer cells, is a potential biomarker of the disease. PSMA PET scans use a radioactive tracer that attaches to PSMA proteins and are then combined with CT or MRI scans to visualise the location of prostate cancer cells. In 2020, this technology received FDA approval based on phase III clinical trials. These showed substantially higher accuracy for detecting prostate cancer metastases compared with conventional imaging using CT and bone scans. When detected early with PSMA PET scans, recurrent prostate cancer can be treated with a targeted approach using stereotactic body radiation therapy, surgery and\/or systemic therapy in a personalised way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><a style=\"color: #008080\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oFsZ3XGiSKU\"><b>Novel Treatment for LDL Reduction<\/b><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nHigh blood cholesterol levels, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), are known to contribute significantly to cardiovascular disease. In 2019, the FDA reviewed the application for <i>Inclisiran<\/i> to treat primary hyperlipidaemia in adults with elevated LDL-C while on a maximally tolerated dose of statin therapy. <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><i>Inclisiran<\/i> is an injectable small interfering RNA (ribonucleic acid) that targets the PCSK9 protein.<\/span> Unlike statins, it requires infrequent dosing (twice a year) and provides effective, sustained LDL-C reduction alongside statins. Its long-lasting effect may help mitigate medication non-adherence, a leading cause of failure to lower cholesterol levels. <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><i>Inclisiran<\/i> was approved by the FDA in December 2021 and is widely considered a game-changer for patients with heart disease.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kpXsJ8WyQI4\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><b>Novel drug for the treatment of<\/b><\/span><b><span style=\"color: #008080\"> type 2 diabetes.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6425 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/4.Novedoso-farmaco-para-el-tratamiento-de-la-diabetes-tipo-2-1-300x183.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/4.Novedoso-farmaco-para-el-tratamiento-de-la-diabetes-tipo-2-1-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/4.Novedoso-farmaco-para-el-tratamiento-de-la-diabetes-tipo-2-1.png 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/b><\/a><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the United States, <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">1 in 10 people has diabetes,<\/span> which affects how the body turns food into energy. One potential therapy is a once-weekly injectable glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that aims to control blood sugar. Injected under the skin, it acts on GLP-1 and GIP receptors to make the pancreas release insulin and block the hormone glucagon, limiting blood sugar spikes after a meal. It also slows digestion, so people stay full for longer and eat less. So far, the latest phase III clinical trials show the treatment significantly lowers haemoglobin A1C in type 2 diabetes and supports weight loss, making it potentially the most effective therapy for diabetes and obesity developed to date.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><a style=\"color: #008080\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AnVo0WGBpW8\"><b>Innovative treatment for postpartum depression<\/b><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nExperts believe the rate of postpartum depression could be at least double what current statistics show because many cases go undiagnosed. Currently, <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">counselling and antidepressant medication are the main treatments, but some women do not respond to these therapies.<\/span> In 2019, the FDA approved an intravenous infusion treatment designed specifically to treat postpartum depression. This novel therapy, administered<span style=\"color: #3366ff\"> continuously over 60 hours,<\/span> uses a neurosteroid to control the brain&#8217;s response to stress. The treatment design is innovative, as it targets signalling believed to be deficient in hormone-sensitive postpartum depression. In addition, the treatment appears to show benefits very quickly, whereas traditional antidepressants usually take two to four weeks to have a significant effect. This rapid treatment option would be a major advance for women with this often-overlooked condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/FI0GjUFxXCM\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><b>Targeted Drugs for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For decades, doctors have only been able to treat the symptoms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) using drugs developed for other heart conditions, with limited efficacy. Currently, non-specific drugs are prescribed to treat some of the symptoms HCM shares with other cardiovascular diseases. These therapies include beta blockers, anti-arrhythmic drugs, calcium channel blockers and anticoagulants. However, a new treatment works to reduce the root cause of the problem in many patients. A first-in-class drug specifically targets the heart muscle to reduce abnormal contractions caused by genetic variants that send the heart into overdrive. By acting specifically on this mechanism in patients with HCM, this novel treatment not only improves symptoms and quality of life, but could potentially slow disease progression. The FDA has assigned a target action date for this therapy of 28 April 2022. If approved, it would be the first drug explicitly dedicated to treating HCM, bringing new hope to patients and doctors.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><a style=\"color: #008080\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Wj2I7EXfQc8\"><b>Non-hormonal alternatives for menopause <\/b><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">50% of all menopausal women experience hot flushes<\/span>, which can persist for an average of seven years. While effective and safe when used appropriately, hormone therapy carries some risk, and not all patients are suitable candidates or ready to try this treatment option. Fortunately, a new group of non-hormonal drugs, called <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">NK3R antagonists<\/span>, has emerged as a viable alternative to hormone therapy. These drugs disrupt a signalling pathway in the brain that has been linked to the development of hot flushes and have shown promise in clinical trials for relieving moderate to severe menopausal hot flushes as effectively as hormones. Further studies are needed to fully understand the efficacy and safety of these new drugs, but it is clear that the next generation of non-hormonal treatments for menopausal hot flushes is on the horizon.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-TJkw1sGMFk\"><b><span style=\"color: #008080\">Implantable device for severe paralysis<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6427 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8.Implantable-para-paralisis-severa-300x183.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8.Implantable-para-paralisis-severa-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/8.Implantable-para-paralisis-severa.png 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/b><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\">Approximately <span style=\"color: #3366ff\">one in 50 Americans, or 5.4 million people, lives with some form of paralysis.<\/span> Most patients experience a significant decline in their overall health. Recently, a team has offered new hope to these patients by harnessing implanted brain-computer interface technology to regain lost motor control and allow patients to control digital devices. The technology uses implanted electrodes to collect movement signals from the brain and decode them into movement commands. It has been shown to restore voluntary motor impulses in patients with severe paralysis due to brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve or muscle dysfunction. While interface technology is in its infancy, the FDA has designated the implantable device a &#8220;breakthrough device&#8221;, reinforcing the need to bring this technology to the bedside of the patients who need it most.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><a style=\"color: #008080\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WVxmbZJ12s0\"><b>AI for early sepsis detection <\/b><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nSepsis is a severe inflammatory response to infection and one of the leading causes of hospitalisation and death worldwide. Because septic shock has a very high mortality rate, early diagnosis of sepsis is critical. Diagnosis can be difficult because early symptoms are common in other conditions and the current diagnostic standard is non-specific. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a new tool that can help detect sepsis quickly. Using AI algorithms, the tool detects several key risk factors in real time by monitoring patients&#8217; electronic medical records as doctors enter information. Flagging high-risk patients can help facilitate early intervention, which can improve outcomes, reduce healthcare costs and save lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gD4jWJsus5g\"><b><span style=\"color: #008080\">Predictive analytics and hypertension<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6423 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/10.Analisis-predictivo-e-hipertension-300x183.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/10.Analisis-predictivo-e-hipertension-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/10.Analisis-predictivo-e-hipertension.png 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/b><\/a><br \/>\nOften known as the &#8220;silent killer&#8221;, hypertension, or high blood pressure, usually has no symptoms and increases the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, heart failure and stroke. Effective treatment options exist; however, many adults don&#8217;t know they have hypertension until they experience a major health crisis. Using machine learning, a type of artificial intelligence, doctors can better select the most effective medications, medication combinations and doses to improve hypertension control. AI will also allow doctors to predict cardiovascular morbidities and focus on interventions before they occur.
