To mark it, urologist Samuel Haywood of <strong><span style=\"color: #008080\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/strong>, a nonprofit multispecialty academic medical centre that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education, explains how to do a testicular self-examination. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008080\"><strong>About the self-examination<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">According to specialists, two minutes a month can save your life: that&#8217;s the time it takes to check yourself for testicular cancer. Yet most men don&#8217;t check themselves regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">In fact, only 4 in 10 men surveyed by <span style=\"color: #008080\"><strong><em>Cleveland Clinic<\/em><\/strong><\/span> reported regularly examining their testicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">&#8220;That&#8217;s a missed opportunity to get ahead of a health problem,&#8221; says urologist Samuel Haywood. &#8220;Testicular cancer is very treatable, with a 95% cure rate, but you have to know it&#8217;s there to treat it,&#8221; the specialist adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008080\">How to do the check<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333\">This is a hands-on activity best done after a warm bath or shower. The heat relaxes the skin of the scrotum, making it easier to feel anything unusual.<\/span><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Use both hands to check each testicle. Place your index and middle fingers under the testicle and your thumb on top. Then gently roll each testicle between your thumb and fingers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">As you feel your testicles, pay attention to any hard lumps on or in them. These lumps can be the size of a pea or larger and feel like a small stone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">If you find a lump, contact your doctor to have it checked.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">&#8220;The left and right testicles can be different sizes. That&#8217;s fine,&#8221; says Dr. Haywood. &#8220;However, as you check month to month, notice whether your testicles seem to change in size, shape or firmness. Any change is worth a call to your doctor&#8217;s office,&#8221; he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">&#8220;One last note: as you do the self-exam, you&#8217;ll come across a cord-like structure at the top and back of each testicle. This is called the epididymis and it&#8217;s supposed to be there. The tube-shaped structure stores and carries sperm,&#8221; says Dr. Haywood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008080\"><strong>Why is it important to check your testicles?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Testicular cancer is usually curable, even at later stages. The overall cure rate is 95%. If caught early, that success rate rises to 98%.
