{"id":12824,"date":"2022-10-11T17:56:54","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T21:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/procedures-to-tackle-obesity-and-overweight-are-not-a-magic-formula\/"},"modified":"2022-10-11T17:56:54","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T21:56:54","slug":"procedures-to-tackle-obesity-and-overweight-are-not-a-magic-formula","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/blog-en\/procedures-to-tackle-obesity-and-overweight-are-not-a-magic-formula\/","title":{"rendered":"Procedures to tackle obesity and overweight are not a magic formula"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><li><mark style=\"color:#4a4a4a\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Since 1998, 11 October has marked Latin American Day against Obesity, reflecting the region&#8217;s scientific community&#8217;s concern about &#8220;the epidemic of the 21st century&#8221;.<\/strong><\/mark><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:15px\"><li><strong><mark style=\"color:#4a4a4a\" class=\"has-inline-color\">One of the most important public health problems of the past 50 years is the weight gain that leads to overweight and obesity.<\/mark><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Santo Domingo, October 2022<\/strong>.- To mark <strong><mark style=\"color:#004058\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Latin American Day against Obesity<\/mark><\/strong> on 11 October, doctors Luis Betances, general, bariatric and metabolic surgeon; Ra\u00fal Ubi\u00f1as, general, advanced laparoscopic, bariatric and metabolic surgeon; and Philippe Garc\u00eda, general and laparoscopic surgeon, of the <strong><mark style=\"color:#46be00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Diabetes, Obesity and Specialties Medical Centre (CEMDOE)<\/mark><\/strong>, dispel the myth that surgical procedures are a definitive solution for patients with obesity and overweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;To help patients lose weight there are a variety of options, such as gastric balloons, gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and combined procedures such as sleeve and bypass,&#8221; explained Dr. Ubi\u00f1as on the <strong><mark style=\"color:#46be00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Es Cuesti\u00f3n de Salud podcast from the INTEGRA Ecosystem<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Each of these procedures has its own function and the choice depends on what needs to be achieved: someone who is overweight and doesn&#8217;t need their stomach cut can use the balloon, while for type two or three obesity another method is recommended, the doctors stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The procedures are an aid; there is no study proving that anyone who had one of these procedures maintained their weight for more than five years,&#8221; <strong><mark style=\"color:#004058\" class=\"has-inline-color\">said Betances<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">It is important for patients to receive a comprehensive approach to overweight or obesity, supervised by one or more health professionals, from the nutritionist and surgeon to psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pre-surgery requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The specialists explained that a patient with obesity who wants a procedure must first undergo a series of assessments, tests and studies to determine whether they qualify before proceeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;One guideline says patients must be over 18, but we have operated on younger patients, as long as there is parental consent and psychological support. It also says up to 65, but sometimes older people have the right genetics and the procedure can be done,&#8221; <strong><mark style=\"color:#004058\" class=\"has-inline-color\">says Ubi\u00f1as<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>After surgery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">On the post-operative process, <strong><mark style=\"color:#004058\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Philippe Garc\u00eda<\/mark><\/strong> notes that it can vary depending on the patient&#8217;s condition, but one important thing is to exercise \u2013 it doesn&#8217;t matter what kind, whatever best suits their tastes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#004058\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Garc\u00eda <\/mark><\/strong>told the story of a patient who had had surgery and refused to exercise because she didn&#8217;t like anything; he tried to guide her until she discovered boxing, which she has now been doing for several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">How many pounds are lost depends on how overweight the person is. In this regard,<strong><mark style=\"color:#004058\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Dr. Betances<\/mark><\/strong> recalls operating on a patient who was 600 pounds overweight and lost 80 in a month, while another who was only 100 pounds above ideal weight lost 15.
