{"id":12829,"date":"2022-10-25T15:01:26","date_gmt":"2022-10-25T19:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/breast-cancer-risk-doubles-for-women-with-a-family-history-of-the-disease\/"},"modified":"2022-10-25T15:01:26","modified_gmt":"2022-10-25T19:01:26","slug":"breast-cancer-risk-doubles-for-women-with-a-family-history-of-the-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/press-room\/breast-cancer-risk-doubles-for-women-with-a-family-history-of-the-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Breast cancer risk doubles for women with a family history of the disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><mark style=\"color:#2f2f2f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cancers linked to genetic mutations often occur in people under 60.<\/mark><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><mark style=\"color:#2f2f2f\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Up to 80 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease.  <\/strong><\/mark><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>October 2022.- <\/strong>Both women and men with a family history of <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong> should know how important it is to carry out <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">monthly self-exams<\/mark><\/strong> and <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">see their doctor<\/mark><\/strong> if they notice any changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Genetics play a dominant role in treatment planning for <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong>. Where appropriate, family-based risk assessments and genetic testing can provide a basic understanding of the structure and function of genes and help determine the best treatment option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Elizabeth Stone of <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s<\/mark><\/strong> Department of <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Hematology<\/mark><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> and<\/mark><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Oncology<\/mark><\/strong> said the risk of breast cancer doubles for women with an immediate family member who has had <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong>: approximately 20 to 30 per cent of women diagnosed with <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong> have a relative who has also had it, according to data from the <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">American Cancer Society<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">However, up to 80 per cent of women diagnosed with <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong> have no family history, and the cancer is thought to result from genetic abnormalities caused by the natural ageing process. <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The American Cancer Society<\/mark><\/strong> notes that 5-10 per cent of <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancers<\/mark><\/strong> are thought to be linked to genetic mutations a woman inherits from her mother or father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The most common genes associated with hereditary breast cancer risk are the <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">BRCA1<\/mark><\/strong> and <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">BRCA2<\/mark><\/strong> genes. A blood test is needed to determine whether a patient carries either gene, with results typically available within a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A patient&#8217;s story<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The story of 37-year-old Mar\u00eda serves as a warning: despite knowing her family history, she put off seeing a doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">She emigrated from Venezuela to the United States in 2016; 12 years earlier her mother had been diagnosed with <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong> at 50, and tests showed she carried the BRCA1 gene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Mar\u00eda knew she needed genetic testing, but because of her many commitments she didn&#8217;t have it until 2019, when she learned she carried the BRCA1 gene. Her doctor recommended she see an oncologist at <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic Florida<\/mark><\/strong>, but she postponed her appointment because of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn&#8217;t until June 2021 that she noticed a lump in her breast and went straight to <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic<\/mark><\/strong>; unfortunately, at just 36, she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancers<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Mar\u00eda has now completed her treatment and is doing very well. She will have a hysterectomy, as the BRCA1 gene gives her a higher chance of developing another gynaecological cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recommendation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Elizabeth Stone, who treated Mar\u00eda at <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic<\/mark><\/strong>, citing the <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)<\/mark><\/strong>, recommends that everyone diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer have genetic testing for inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It affects men too<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">For most people, <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong> is a disease that affects women, but men can develop it too, although breast cancer in men is rare (less than 1% of all new <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong> cases).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Risk factors for men are similar to those for women, but also include testicular conditions, oestrogen exposure and Klinefelter syndrome, a congenital condition that affects about 1 in every 1,000 men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The risk of <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">breast cancer<\/mark><\/strong> in men increases with age, and it is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 50 and 70.
