{"id":12869,"date":"2023-04-03T10:25:28","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T14:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/habitat-dominicana-and-its-partners-build-housing-solutions-in-eastern-areas-hit-by-hurricane-fiona\/"},"modified":"2023-04-03T10:25:28","modified_gmt":"2023-04-03T14:25:28","slug":"habitat-dominicana-and-its-partners-build-housing-solutions-in-eastern-areas-hit-by-hurricane-fiona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/press-room\/habitat-dominicana-and-its-partners-build-housing-solutions-in-eastern-areas-hit-by-hurricane-fiona\/","title":{"rendered":"Habitat Dominicana and its partners build housing solutions in eastern areas of the country hit by Hurricane Fiona"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>After Hurricane Fiona, Habitat Dominicana and its partners are building housing solutions for affected families in El Seibo, Miches and La Romana.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Habitat Dominicana<\/mark><\/strong> was there from the first days of distress and desperation for hundreds of families affected by Hurricane Fiona&#8217;s strong winds in communities in El Seibo, Miches and La Romana, through the Resilient Reconstruction after Hurricane Fiona project at the end of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-95.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7952\" width=\"341\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-95.png 1000w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-95-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-95-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Partners such as the <strong><mark style=\"color:#02a569\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Ministry of Housing and Buildings (MIVED)<\/mark><\/strong> provided the initial support to launch rapid-response build brigades, with assistance and reconstruction work in the different communities, helping 112<strong> <\/strong>families, as well as logistical support and delivery of donated materials for the construction work. <strong><mark style=\"color:#02a569\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The&nbsp;<em>Punta Catalina<\/em> Thermoelectric Plant<\/mark><\/strong><em> immediately showed its solidarity by supporting 50 families so they could have a better place to live, with adequate conditions and proper electrical installations. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mr.<\/em> Enrique De Castro, a landowner in the east of the country, backed the organisation&#8217;s reconstruction work so that<strong> <\/strong>49<strong> <\/strong>families in the communities closest to the centre of El Seibo could be helped. <strong><mark style=\"color:#02a569\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The La Romana\u2013Bayahibe Hotel Association<\/mark><\/strong> was among the partners that joined this humanitarian cause, helping 20 <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>affected families in the community of Benerito get back on their feet; <strong><mark style=\"color:#02a569\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Starbucks Corporation<\/mark><\/strong> helped two families transform their lives, one with the construction of a complete housing unit and the other with the repair of their home;<strong><mark style=\"color:#02a569\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Grupo Cometa<\/mark><\/strong> enabled 6 &nbsp;families to have safe access to electricity in their homes; and <strong><mark style=\"color:#02a569\" class=\"has-inline-color\">ROTARY DISTRICT 4060<\/mark><\/strong> helped build roofs for 2 families and trained them in emergency response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">We also thank <strong><mark style=\"color:#02a569\" class=\"has-inline-color\">the NGO World Vision Dominican Republic<\/mark><\/strong>, which helped map the communities and select the families to be assisted, and the local councils in the areas where we worked, which joined the cause of housing from the first hours after the disaster and have been supporting vulnerable families ever since with the reconstruction and repair of resilient homes that ensure the safety of the families most affected by the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-94.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7950\" width=\"389\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-94.png 1000w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-94-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MicrosoftTeams-image-94-768x484.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Our organisation&#8217;s main concern when we began work in the affected areas was for every person to be able to return to their home, and to follow up and support hundreds of families who lost everything in the hurricane. We have stayed close to the most vulnerable together with our partners, volunteers and the great team of staff who work every day to empower families. Thanks to everyone, we continue working even harder for decent housing,&#8221; said Cesarina Fabi\u00e1n, national director of <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>Habitat Dominicana<\/strong>.<\/mark><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The response plan for affected families was launched on 24 September 2022. To date, more than 239 families have been helped with full and partial construction, access to resilient housing services, technical assistance, the formation of community emergency committees, and the empowerment of community leaders and volunteers and their involvement in development and transformation activities in the areas where <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Habitat Dominicana<\/mark><\/strong> has been working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;These were difficult times for so many people left unprotected, with nowhere to stay, out in the open \u2013 many elderly people and frightened children, with their school supplies, clothes and shoes soaked, and parents not knowing what to do. That is exactly when we arrived, and our partners backed the cause that drives our organisation. We started working immediately and together we have been helping families return to their homes. At <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Habitat for Humanity<\/mark><\/strong> we thank our local partners, who leveraged local funds from Habitat for Humanity International&#8217;s risk management fund,&#8221; said Gina Vera, <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Habitat Dominicana Resource Development and Communications<\/mark><\/strong> manager.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the damage was to the roofs and walls of the homes, which are mainly made of palm board.
