{"id":12895,"date":"2023-07-12T16:54:28","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T20:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/fda-approves-a-new-alzheimers-drug\/"},"modified":"2023-07-12T16:54:28","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T20:54:28","slug":"fda-approves-a-new-alzheimers-drug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/blog-en\/fda-approves-a-new-alzheimers-drug\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA approves a new Alzheimer&#8217;s drug"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>An estimated 6.5 million Americans have Alzheimer&#8217;s; the FDA has approved a new drug for people in the early stage of the disease, Cleveland Clinic specialists explain.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CLEVELAND &#8211;<\/strong> According to the Centers for <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/mark><\/strong>, an estimated 6.5 million Americans have <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/mark><\/strong> disease, which has no cure.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/FDA-aprueba-nuevo-medicamento.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8213\" width=\"342\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/FDA-aprueba-nuevo-medicamento.jpg 745w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/FDA-aprueba-nuevo-medicamento-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">However, researchers are hopeful about a new drug recently approved by the <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Food and Drug Administration (FDA) <\/mark><\/strong>for people with early-stage disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When we say <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/mark><\/strong>, it is a broad spectrum, ranging from very early stages to very advanced dementia,&#8221; said <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Babak Tousi, a geriatric neurologist at<\/mark><\/strong> <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic.<\/mark> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;At the moment, there are no findings to support using this drug for people with moderate to advanced dementia. It is for people in the very early stages of the disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The drug, called <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Lecanemab<\/mark><\/strong>, is designed to reduce <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">beta-amyloid plaque<\/mark><\/strong> in the brain. <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Beta-amyloid plaque<\/mark><\/strong> has been linked to <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/mark><\/strong> disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Tousi <\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">explained that the drug does not treat the symptoms of the disease but helps slow its progression.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Cerebro.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8215\" width=\"324\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Cerebro.jpg 745w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Cerebro-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">As for success rates, results from an 18-month clinical trial showed that participants who received the drug had a 27 per cent reduction in<strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> beta-amyloid plaque.<\/mark><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Dr. Tousi<\/mark> <\/strong>said that percentage may seem small, but he believes it is a good starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It looks like we have some treatment. We can affect the trajectory of the disease.
