Eradicating hepatitis C requires everyone to be screened and those who are infected to be treated.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Higado.jpg\" alt=\"Liver\" class=\"wp-image-8239\" width=\"365\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Higado.jpg 650w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Higado-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>July 2023: <mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Hepatitis viruses<\/mark><\/strong> are the seventh leading cause of death worldwide, so it is important for everyone to be <em>screened<\/em> (an active, systematic search) for hepatitis C at least once in their lives and to be vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, says <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. William Carey of the global health system Cleveland Clinic,<\/mark><\/strong> to mark <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">World Hepatitis Day (28 July).<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver.<\/mark><\/strong> Numerous viruses can cause hepatitis, and the five most commonly involved are named A to E. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/world-hepatitis-day\/2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">World Health Organization<\/mark><\/a>, which has set the global goal of eliminating <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">viral hepatitis<\/mark><\/strong> as a public health problem by 2030, there are more than one million hepatitis-related deaths every year and a new chronic infection every 10 seconds. Of greatest concern are the bloodborne hepatitis B and C, which together are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and viral hepatitis-related deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Hepatitis B and C share several similar features, but there are also some important differences,&#8221; <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">says physician and professor of medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/staff\/89-william-carey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">William Carey, MD<\/a>, interim head of Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Section of Hepatology.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Vacuna-hepatitis.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8241\" width=\"355\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Vacuna-hepatitis.jpg 650w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Vacuna-hepatitis-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Carey explains:<\/mark><\/strong> &#8220;In terms of similarities, both viruses are stealthy, meaning that most of the time there are no symptoms at the time of infection. This is especially true of hepatitis C. In a small percentage of hepatitis B cases, there may be relatively mild symptoms such as fatigue. In adult-acquired hepatitis B, there can be more severe illness, including jaundice and even liver failure.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Because of this absence of symptoms in most cases, according to Dr. Carey, many patients carry the virus for years, even decades, before it is discovered when they report symptoms of liver damage, sometimes at an advanced stage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&#8220;One important difference between hepatitis B and C is that there is a highly effective vaccine to prevent hepatitis B and none for hepatitis C,&#8221; says Dr. Carey. <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&#8220;In addition, hepatitis C can be completely cured, whereas the hepatitis B virus can only be suppressed.<\/mark><\/strong> Suppressing hepatitis B is enough to prevent further liver damage or transmission to others, but because the virus remains dormant in liver cells, it can reactivate under certain conditions, such as when taking some medications that weaken certain parts of the immune system.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The specialist adds: &#8220;The vast majority of hepatitis B infections occur at birth, transmitted from mother to child. Fortunately, most countries now have programmes to identify pregnant women infected with hepatitis B and highly effective immunisation strategies to prevent mother-to-child transmission. <mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mothers with a very high viral load will be given medication to reduce it, which further lowers the likelihood of the baby becoming infected.&#8221;<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Summing up the strategies for reaching the <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">World Health Organization&#8217;s<\/mark><\/strong> 2030 goal, Dr. Carey says: &#8220;To eradicate hepatitis B, we need a three-pronged strategy, namely vaccination, interruption of mother-to-child transmission and, for those who are infected, suppression of the virus with medication. To eradicate hepatitis C, we need everyone to be screened and those who are infected to be treated.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liver-Detox-510154886-770x533-1-650x428-1.jpg\" alt=\"Liver\" class=\"wp-image-8243\" width=\"344\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liver-Detox-510154886-770x533-1-650x428-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liver-Detox-510154886-770x533-1-650x428-1-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">On that last point, Dr. Carey says<strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> World Hepatitis Day<\/mark><\/strong> <mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">is an opportunity to raise awareness that there is now an extremely safe and effective treatment for hepatitis C.<\/mark> &#8220;Although relatively expensive, the treatment has no significant side effects and works for all hepatitis C genotypes found around the world. Given these circumstances, everyone should be screened at least once in their lives so that infections can be treated immediately, quickly halting the liver damage caused by the virus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Additional precautions<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Because hepatitis B and C are transmitted through bodily fluids, especially blood, <\/mark><\/strong>Dr. Carey advises healthcare workers and people who engage in behaviours that increase their risk of infection to talk to their doctor about the need for regular screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">If people test positive for viral hepatitis, they will need their liver assessed for damage, which can be done with simple blood tests and non-invasive tests to assess the amount of liver fibrosis or scarring, Dr. Carey explains.<\/mark> If liver damage such as cirrhosis is found, it will need to be treated, and patients will also need regular screening for liver cancer. &#8220;Interestingly, in many cases, when people who have developed cirrhosis are treated for hepatitis, their cirrhosis also goes away, although the increased risk of liver cancer remains,&#8221; notes Dr. Carey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"47\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Cleveland_Clinic_logo_color-300x47.png\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Cleveland Clinic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic<\/mark><\/strong> is a nonprofit multispecialty academic medical centre that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education.
