To mark the occasion, <mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Cleveland Clinic endocrinologist Ricardo Correa Marquez<\/strong> <\/mark>talks about some new medicines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The latest <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">diabetes<\/mark><\/strong> medicines include a pill that works through a system independent of insulin, called <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">SGLT2<\/mark><\/strong> inhibitors, and a mostly injectable medicine that acts as an agonist of a hormone called <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">GLP1<\/mark><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&#8220;These two medicines have been shown to be effective not only in improving <strong>diabetes<\/strong> but also in protecting against cardiovascular disease and protecting the kidneys,&#8221; explains the specialist. <\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">They lower <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">A1c (a blood haemoglobin test that shows patients&#8217; average blood sugar level)<\/mark><\/strong> by roughly 1-1.5 points when given individually, and when combined they can lower A1c by up to 2 points.
