According to the <strong><mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean,<\/mark><\/strong> more than 32% of total health spending in the region is out-of-pocket spending by households. This means that almost a third of the cost of <strong><mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">healthcare in Latin America and the Caribbean<\/mark><\/strong> comes out of patients&#8217; pockets \u2013 far from the figure in <strong><mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development<\/mark><\/strong> countries, where it is around 21%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-un-enfoque-centrado-en-la-innovacion-para-el-desarrollo-de-tratamientos\"><strong>An innovation-focused approach to developing treatments<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mass General Brigham<\/mark><\/strong> has one of the largest research programmes in the United States, with an annual research budget of almost 2 billion dollars, funding more than 2,700 clinical trials to speed up the introduction of new treatments, technological advances and therapies for patients around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;We know the importance of research and innovation, and the role our patients play in it. Our hospitals are dedicated to discovering new treatments and cures for a wide range of medical conditions.
