It develops when your pancreas doesn&#8217;t make enough insulin or any at all, or when your body isn&#8217;t responding properly to the effects of insulin.<strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Diabetes affects people of all ages. Most forms of diabetes are chronic (lifelong), and all forms can be managed with medicines and\/or lifestyle changes.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Glucose (sugar) mainly comes from carbohydrates in food and drinks. It&#8217;s your body&#8217;s source of energy. Your blood carries glucose to all your body&#8217;s cells to use for energy.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">When glucose is in your bloodstream, it needs help \u2013 a &#8220;key&#8221; \u2013 to reach its final destination. This key is insulin (a hormone ). If your pancreas isn&#8217;t making enough insulin or your body isn&#8217;t using it properly, glucose builds up in your bloodstream, causing high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, having consistently high blood glucose can cause health problems, such as heart disease , nerve damage and eye problems. Around 537 million adults worldwide have diabetes. Experts predict this number will rise to 643 million by 2030 and 783 million by 2045.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Symptoms of diabetes include:<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased thirst ( polydipsia ) and dry mouth .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frequent urination .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blurred vision .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unexplained weight loss .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slow-healing sores or cuts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frequent vaginal and\/or skin yeast infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Medical advances<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Ricardo-Correa-Marquez-endocrinologo-de-Cleveland-Clinic.jpg\" alt=\"Ricardo Correa Marquez, Cleveland Clinic endocrinologist\" class=\"wp-image-8467\" style=\"width:210px;height:315px\" width=\"210\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Ricardo-Correa-Marquez-endocrinologo-de-Cleveland-Clinic.jpg 427w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Ricardo-Correa-Marquez-endocrinologo-de-Cleveland-Clinic-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ricardo Correa Marquez, Cleveland Clinic endocrinologist<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The latest diabetes medicines include a pill that works through a system<\/mark> independent of insulin, called <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">SGLT2<\/mark><\/strong> inhibitors, and a mostly injectable medicine that acts as an agonist of a hormone called <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">GLP1.<\/mark><\/strong> <mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">These two medicines have been shown to be effective not only in improving diabetes but also in protecting against cardiovascular disease and protecting the kidneys.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">They lower patients&#8217; A1c by roughly 1-1.5 points when given individually, and when combined they can lower A1c by up to 2 points. <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Ricardo Correa Marquez, an endocrinologist at Cleveland Clinic, says<\/mark><\/strong><em> &#8220;this is pretty good. The advantage of these medicines lies in their other protective effects on the heart and kidneys and in weight loss, which help patients generally and with the complications of diabetes.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The focus is on developing medicines that, as well as helping with blood sugar, can help with other complications. There are already studies of other medicines with similar mechanisms that help patients reach their goals and improve their quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Being diagnosed with diabetes is a life-changing event, but it doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t live a happy and healthy life.<\/mark><\/strong> Managing diabetes involves consistent, diligent care.
