If you have dark spots, blurred vision or double vision, see your eye doctor. Early treatment is best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Diabetes-related macular oedema (DME)<\/mark><\/strong><\/em> is swelling of the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/23185-macula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">macula<\/mark><\/a>, the central part of the eye&#8217;s retina. The <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/22694-retina-eye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">retina<\/mark><\/a> is at the back of the eye and is the part that holds the light-sensitive cells. Your macula lets you see fine detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">You can get <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">DME<\/mark><\/strong> if you have diabetes-related retinal disease (<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8591-diabetic-retinopathy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">diabetes-related retinopathy<\/mark><\/a>). Diabetes affects the blood vessels in the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/21823-eyes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">eyes<\/mark><\/a>, making them weaker and more likely to leak blood. It can also cause new, more fragile <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/21640-blood-vessels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">blood vessels<\/mark><\/a> to grow where they shouldn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-que-tan-comun-es\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> How common is it?<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 1 in 14 people with diabetes develops <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/7104-diabetes-mellitus-an-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">diabetes<\/mark><\/a>-related <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">macular oedema<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cuales-son-los-sintomas-del-edema-macular-relacionado-con-la-diabetes\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> What are the symptoms of diabetes-related macular oedema?<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Signs and symptoms of diabetes-related macular oedema may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/24262-blurred-vision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Blurred vision<\/mark><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22203-diplopia-double-vision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">double vision<\/mark><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/14209-floaters--flashers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Floaters<\/mark><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty seeing colours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dark spots (scotomas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Straight lines that look bent or curved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty seeing when there is glare or bright light.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seeing an object as a different size when you look at it with one eye and then the other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cuales-son-las-causas-del-edema-macular-relacionado-con-la-diabetes\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">What causes diabetes-related macular oedema?<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Diabetes-related <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">macular oedema<\/mark><\/strong> happens when high blood sugar levels affect the blood vessels in the eyes. The blood vessels leak, causing fluid to build up and the retina to thicken. Blood vessel problems happen to people who have diabetes-related retinal disease, or diabetes-related retinopathy (<strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">DR<\/mark><\/strong>). The blood vessels weaken and form pouches. The pouches leak. This is non-proliferative <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">DR<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">If you start to develop new blood vessels in your eyes that don&#8217;t belong there, you have <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">proliferative DR<\/mark><\/strong>. These new blood vessels aren&#8217;t as strong as they should be, so they also leak and let blood collect in the macula and retina. A serious complication of untreated diabetes-related <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">macular oedema<\/mark><\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24446-blindness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">vision loss<\/mark><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-como-se-trata-el-edema-macular-relacionado-con-la-diabetes\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">How is diabetes-related macular oedema treated?<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"745\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/elder-Face-Eye-Glucometer1-1227005592-770x533-1-745x490-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8695\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5204081632653061;width:340px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/elder-Face-Eye-Glucometer1-1227005592-770x533-1-745x490-1.jpeg 745w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/elder-Face-Eye-Glucometer1-1227005592-770x533-1-745x490-1-300x197.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Treatment options for <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">DME<\/mark><\/strong> have improved. In fact, some newer medicines work well enough to reverse the damage in some cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">One form of treatment blocks <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF),<\/mark><\/strong> a protein that helps new blood vessels grow. Steroids that control inflammation are another form of treatment applied to the eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s also important to control your blood sugar levels and blood pressure. This may involve other types of medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-medicamentos-para-tratar-el-edema-macular-relacionado-con-la-diabetes\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Medicines to treat diabetes-related macular oedema<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">One way doctors treat <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">DME<\/mark><\/strong> is with a series of intravitreal injections of medicine (injections into the eye&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/24611-aqueous-humor-vitreous-humor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">vitreous humour<\/mark><\/a>). These medicines include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aflibercept (Eylea\u00ae).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bevacizumab (Avastin\u00ae).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faricimab-svoa (VABYSMO).\u00ae<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ranibizumab (Lucentis\u00ae).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dexamethasone (Ozurdex\u00ae).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluocinolone acetonide (Iluvien\u00ae).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Ozurdex and Iluvien are steroid implants that doctors inject into the eyes.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Procedures to treat diabetes-related macular oedema: one option is to use <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">laser therapy (photocoagulation)<\/mark><\/strong> to seal the blood vessels in the eyes and stop the leaking.
