Fortunately, there are now programmes that speed up these procedures and save lives. This was the case for Jes\u00fas Maradiaga and Teresa Barahona, husband and wife, who are originally from El Salvador and now live in Massachusetts, United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, Jes\u00fas began to feel pain in his right knee. As the pain continued, he decided to seek medical advice in El Salvador. Jes\u00fas was prepared to have knee surgery, but instead received a diagnosis he did not expect:<mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong> <\/strong><\/mark><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneralbrigham.org\/en\/about\/newsroom\/articles\/chronic-kidney-disease-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\">kidney disease.<\/mark><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\">After the diagnosis, Jes\u00fas and Teresa first tried to understand his illness. They then looked for treatment options in El Salvador and abroad. After their research, they decided the best option for him was <strong><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneralbrigham.org\/en\/patient-care\/international\/about\/massachusetts-general-hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Massachusetts General Hospital<\/a> in Boston, United States.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The onset of kidney disease<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6 wp-block-paragraph\">Jes\u00fas Maradiaga, a keen football player in his native El Salvador, felt unusual pain in his knee during a friendly match. As the pain persisted, he decided to see his primary care doctor. When his doctor noticed other signs of possible illness, including changes in his eyes and skin, Jes\u00fas was immediately sent for a blood test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7 wp-block-paragraph\">After reviewing the results, the doctor told Jes\u00fas that he urgently needed dialysis. He was soon diagnosed with <strong><mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fUrQkLPDFzo&amp;t=1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kidney failure<\/a>.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The diagnosis left me in shock. It didn&#8217;t seem real, as I didn&#8217;t have any other symptoms,&#8221;<\/em> says Jes\u00fas.<strong><mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Other symptoms of kidney disease can include fatigue, shortness of breath and nausea.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9 wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after his first appointment, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/medicine\/nephrology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mass General nephrology team<\/mark><\/a> <\/strong>confirmed that he had kidney failure and recommended long-term dialysis. Jes\u00fas remembers it was very hard to hear the news, but he committed to following dialysis treatment for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-10 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\">As he is a native Spanish speaker, Mass General made sure a medical interpreter from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/interpreters\/contact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mass General&#8217;s Medical Interpreter Services<\/a> was available and present at all visits and procedures.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-11 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The hope of a transplant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-12 wp-block-paragraph\">Jes\u00fas was on dialysis for about two years, during which he remembers feeling weak and lethargic. It was the idea of a possible transplant that kept him motivated and hopeful about the future. The <mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Mass General<\/strong> <\/mark>transplant team told him that living donation is the best way to receive a new organ. Although many friends and family members volunteered to be screened as potential living donors, none was successful.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"460\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Nahel-Elias-MD-director-quirurgico-de-trasplantes-de-rinon-de-Mass-General.jpg\" alt=\"Nahel Elias, MD, surgical director of kidney transplantation at Mass General\" class=\"wp-image-8758\" style=\"width:269px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Nahel-Elias-MD-director-quirurgico-de-trasplantes-de-rinon-de-Mass-General.jpg 460w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Nahel-Elias-MD-director-quirurgico-de-trasplantes-de-rinon-de-Mass-General-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Nahel-Elias-MD-director-quirurgico-de-trasplantes-de-rinon-de-Mass-General-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nahel Elias, MD, surgical director of kidney transplantation at Mass General<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The biggest obstacle is finding someone who can donate,&#8221;<\/em> <strong>says <a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.massgeneralbrigham.org\/provider\/Nahel+Elias\/253070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nahel Elias, MD<\/a>, surgical director of kidney transplantation at Mass General and Jes\u00fas&#8217;s transplant surgeon<em>.<\/em><\/strong><em> &#8220;Finding the perfect match isn&#8217;t the problem; it&#8217;s finding someone who is healthy enough to donate.&#8221;<\/em> For all patients with kidney disease like Jes\u00fas, <strong><mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Elias says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/transplant\/about\/living-donor-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">living donation<\/a> is the preferred treatment option over dialysis and deceased donation, as the organ lasts longer.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14 wp-block-paragraph\">At first, the family did not consider Teresa, as she had a different blood type. However, her determination to help her husband led them to look into her as a potential donor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-15 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;From the moment Jes\u00fas was diagnosed, I was fully committed to donating my kidney to him. Seeing him go through dialysis only strengthened my decision and the impact my kidney donation would have. I didn&#8217;t even think twice,&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;says Teresa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-16 wp-block-paragraph\">To take part in a kidney exchange, Teresa first had to confirm she met the requirements to be a donor, which involved several rounds of extensive testing, blood tests and meetings with a living donor advocate social worker. In the end, she was considered healthy and her donation was approved; however, she was incompatible with Jes\u00fas. <strong><mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/transplant\/transplant-programs\/kidney-transplant-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mass General kidney transplant team<\/a> recommended that they take part in a paired kidney exchange.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-17 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The biggest misconception about living donation is that you have to be a perfect match for the recipient,&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;says Dr. Elias.&nbsp;<em>&#8220;In reality, you don&#8217;t have to be a perfect match, just healthy.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-18 wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Mass General<\/strong> <\/mark>enrolled them on the waiting list of the <strong><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/unos.org\/transplant\/kidney-paired-donation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNOS Kidney Paired Donation Program<\/a>,<\/mark><\/strong> <mark style=\"color:#07289c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">which works to speed up transplants for patients with blood group antibodies or other incompatibilities with their potential living donors. <\/mark>Through this programme, Teresa donated her kidney to an unknown recipient, while Jes\u00fas received a kidney from an unknown donor as part of an exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-19 wp-block-paragraph\">For Jes\u00fas, the hope that had kept him going for two years was becoming a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-20 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The transplant experience at Mass General<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-21 wp-block-paragraph\">Jes\u00fas&#8217;s and Teresa&#8217;s surgeries were scheduled for the same day in June 2020, a date that coincided with the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the pandemic, additional measures were taken before surgery to ensure their safety and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-block-list wp-elements-22\">\n<li>&nbsp;Both Teresa and Jes\u00fas were tested for COVID-19 before surgery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The hospital took additional safety precautions in its spaces, such as vigilant cleaning of frequently touched surfaces, and among staff, such as daily testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-23 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I felt extremely safe during all the visits and the surgery. Disinfection, deep cleaning, physical distancing and disposable masks were some of the measures I remember from my experience,&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;says Jes\u00fas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-24 wp-block-paragraph\">After the surgery, Jes\u00fas remembers feeling mild pain around the incision and great gratitude. Both Jes\u00fas and Teresa were discharged from <strong><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mass General<\/mark><\/strong> a few days after their operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-25 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Many patients, both donors and recipients, ask about restrictions after surgery,&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.massgeneralbrigham.org\/provider\/Leigh+A+Dageforde\/789223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leigh Anne Dageforde, MD, MPH<\/a>, the donor&#8217;s surgeon.&nbsp;<em>&#8220;There aren&#8217;t too many long-term restrictions on their activities. In general, I recommend no heavy lifting for six to eight weeks. For donors, recovery is easier.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-26 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>For example, they can usually drive a week after donating.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em>Other recovery recommendations are to stay hydrated and give the body time to recover from the operation. Both donors and recipients are encouraged to walk, even on the night of the surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-27 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A new life after surgery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-28 wp-block-paragraph\">Although many recipients of donated organs, especially kidneys, tend to outlive their new organ, Dr. Elias says Jes\u00fas and Teresa&#8217;s case represents the ideal treatment option for kidney disease.&nbsp;<em>&#8220;Living donation has better outcomes overall. There are fewer complications and the results last longer,&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;says Dr. Elias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-29 wp-block-paragraph\">Since the surgery, Jes\u00fas has never felt better; his energy levels are back to normal and he has returned to his usual life. His post-operative follow-up includes weekly blood tests and virtual visits with his <strong><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mass General<\/mark><\/strong> care team. Teresa reports a similar recovery, returning to normal life shortly after being discharged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-30 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#1b9894\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>&#8220;When I look back, I realise it has been one of the best medical experiences of my life.
