From retirement, business and shopping tourism to health-related visits, the results of these options are reflected in the statistics. In 2022, revenue from the hotel and restaurant industry totalled some US$8,406.5 million, <strong>according to Central Bank (BC) data.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC)<\/mark><\/strong> said local <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">travel and tourism<\/mark><\/strong> grew by 26% compared with the previous year to more than US$16,700 million, accounting for 15% of the Dominican economy. By the end of 2023, its total contribution to <strong>gross domestic product<\/strong> (GDP) will exceed US$17,700 million, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of this year, the national <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">tourism sector<\/mark><\/strong> is also projected to reach 850,900 jobs. To achieve this, one offering that looks increasingly attractive is <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">health tourism<\/mark><\/strong>, which contributed US$1,321 million in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\">Care for international patients in the country is mainly based in private hospitals with&nbsp;<strong>cutting-edge technology<\/strong>, plastic surgery clinics and dental practices, some of them internationally accredited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The key is to get patients to leave their own environment, which often has good hospitals, and come to the country. To do that, we must first offer a safe place and, second \u2013 and this is something where the Dominican Republic stands out \u2013 the price, even with the latest technology,&#8221; <strong>Dr. H\u00e9ctor S\u00e1nchez Navarro<\/strong> told <strong>El Dinero<\/strong>. He is <strong><mark style=\"color:#047c50\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><\/mark><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> <\/mark><mark style=\"color:#047c50\" class=\"has-inline-color\">director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute (Meta Integra) at Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS).<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7 wp-block-paragraph\">As detailed in the <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">&#8220;Second Health and Wellness Tourism Study&#8221;,<\/mark><\/strong> services for <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">local health tourism<\/mark><\/strong> are mainly offered in the south-east, specifically in Santo Domingo, Punta Cana and La Romana, and in the north, in Santiago and Puerto Plata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Technology at a low price<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The economic factor is very important. If we offered everything we have at Boston prices, it wouldn&#8217;t be good business. We need to have the same product and technological advances, but more attractive,&#8221; <strong><mark style=\"color:#047c50\" class=\"has-inline-color\">added S\u00e1nchez Navarro.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-10 wp-block-paragraph\">This is where <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">telemedicine<\/mark><\/strong> comes in. Although <strong><mark style=\"color:#047c50\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fedor Vidal, CEO of Arium Salud Digital,<\/mark><\/strong> believes it has been misunderstood or misinterpreted, thanks to this technology &#8220;there is no need to have (appointments or consultations) in person&#8221;. Even so, he makes clear that not everything can be done with <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">telemedicine<\/mark><\/strong>, saying &#8220;it is a very powerful tool, for example, for triage before a patient comes to the country&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-11 wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#047c50\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Triage<\/strong><\/mark> <mark style=\"color:#047c50\" class=\"has-inline-color\">means checking or validating that a patient is suitable for a specific procedure in a country before they travel. Even so, he stresses that <strong>telemedicine<\/strong> is very broad.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-12 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have&nbsp;<strong>teleconsultation, telemetry, telediagnosis<\/strong> and second opinions \u2013 there&#8217;s a whole world within that framework,&#8221; he explained. That is why he stresses that it should be used in a very focused way for certain processes. In the&nbsp;<strong>United States<\/strong>, during the pandemic, it went from around 3,000,000 telemedicine consultations to more than 225,000,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Of course, that was related to the health crisis, but it has normalised, and right now 22% of primary interactions take place via telemedicine and are no longer done in person,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14 wp-block-paragraph\">The Dominican Republic is still taking its first steps. He says some fields have begun to use it, such as <strong>psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists<\/strong>. <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">For Vidal,<\/mark><\/strong> <strong>teleconsultation<\/strong> is very cost-effective for several reasons. First, he cites the low investment, which he described as minimal, but with an &#8220;extremely important&#8221; economic impact for clinics or doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-15 wp-block-paragraph\">The reasons include opening up new and more consultations, time management and absenteeism. &#8220;<strong>Telemedicine<\/strong> removes or lowers the barrier of <strong>no-shows<\/strong>. If you have a patient who doesn&#8217;t turn up for an appointment, (thanks to telemedicine) you save money because you don&#8217;t have to travel.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-16 wp-block-paragraph\">It is expected that, if the country&#8217;s <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">health tourism sector<\/mark><\/strong> is strengthened, by 2028 it would receive around<strong> 500,000 international patients<\/strong>, a 47% increase on 2022, and thereafter would grow by 30% every 5 years to become a competitive destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-17 wp-block-paragraph\">According to the study, on that projection, more than 1 million international patients could be treated by 2043. The report also says that if 70% of international patients travel with a companion, the impact on visitor numbers would be equivalent to <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">1.7 million tourists<\/mark><\/strong> from this segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-18 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hospitals and hotels<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-19 wp-block-paragraph\">Something else that adds to the <strong>local offering<\/strong> is what <strong><mark style=\"color:#047c50\" class=\"has-inline-color\">S\u00e1nchez Navarro described<\/mark><\/strong> as a &#8220;distinctive experience&#8221;. This means a patient can come for oral, cosmetic or obesity surgery or liposculpture, and also have somewhere pleasant to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-20 wp-block-paragraph\">In this sense, hospitals with hotels nearby offer a kind of health tourism package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-21 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are a country driven by <strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">tourism<\/mark><\/strong>, which is an extremely important part of its economy.
