It removes a large part of the stomach, leaving behind a narrow &#8220;sleeve&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Matthew Kroh, section head of surgical endoscopy and vice chair of innovation and technology at Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Digestive Disease Institute,<\/mark><\/strong> led the team that successfully performed the operation in September. Following the procedure to treat obesity, the patient is doing well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Advances in robotic technology allow surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery with fewer incisions,&#8221; <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">said Dr. Kroh.<\/mark><\/strong> &#8220;As a result, patients experience less pain, less scarring and a faster recovery.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\">Combining <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">magnetic technology with a surgical robot<\/mark><\/strong> enhances minimally invasive surgery and provides benefits for both patients and surgeons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6 wp-block-paragraph\">Reflecting on the first case using a <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">surgical robot with magnetic technology, Dr. Kroh <\/mark><\/strong>highlighted the use of one of the robotic arms equipped with a surgical camera. &#8220;It&#8217;s an advantage for the surgeon to control the robotic arm with the camera to see inside the body and visualise tissues and organs during surgery. Without the robot, the surgical camera would be placed on a thin rod, and I would communicate with an assistant to ask them to move the camera.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7 wp-block-paragraph\">With <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">magnetic technology,<\/mark><\/strong> surgeons can use the magnet to gently manipulate tissues and organs as needed during the surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8 wp-block-paragraph\">For the first case, <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Kroh and lead surgeon Dr. Andrew Strong used magnetic technology<\/mark><\/strong> to gently move the liver and view the stomach while the abdominal procedure was performed laparoscopically. The research paper, published in <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Annals of Surgery Open, <\/mark><\/strong>concluded that the robotic platform brings the benefits of magnetic surgery by reducing incisions and gives the surgeon full control of the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-11 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Robotic technologies will increasingly incorporate more advanced navigation and imaging systems to allow us to operate more effectively and safely,&#8221; <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">said Dr. Kroh.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-12 wp-block-paragraph\">In August 2023, the <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">magnetically assisted robotic surgery platform was approved by the FDA for abdominal surgeries, including gallbladder removal and bariatric surgery.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13 wp-block-paragraph\">Since the first case at <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic<\/mark><\/strong> in September, <strong><mark style=\"color:#0b5d8c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Kroh and his team have successfully performed further procedures using the robotic platform, including a gastric bypass procedure.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"47\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Cleveland_Clinic_logo_color-300x47.png\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Cleveland Clinic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\"><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> is a nonprofit multispecialty academic medical centre that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education.
