{"id":12961,"date":"2024-02-06T09:12:36","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T13:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/cleveland-clinic-expert-sounds-the-alarm-over-the-global-rise-in-early-onset-cancer-cases\/"},"modified":"2024-02-06T09:12:36","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T13:12:36","slug":"cleveland-clinic-expert-sounds-the-alarm-over-the-global-rise-in-early-onset-cancer-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/press-room\/cleveland-clinic-expert-sounds-the-alarm-over-the-global-rise-in-early-onset-cancer-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"Cleveland Clinic expert sounds the alarm over the global rise in early-onset cancer cases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>It is essential that adolescents and adults under 50 are aware of cancer symptoms, their individual risk factors and treatment options.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"856\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Joven-en-consulta.jpg\" alt=\"Young person at a medical appointment\" class=\"wp-image-8945\" style=\"width:475px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Joven-en-consulta.jpg 856w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Joven-en-consulta-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Joven-en-consulta-768x502.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>February 2024, CLEVELAND, OHIO<\/strong>: With <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer<\/mark><\/strong> diagnoses in young people rising <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">worldwide,<\/mark><\/strong> it is crucial to raise awareness of<strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> symptoms<\/mark><\/strong>, family history and differences in treatment approaches for adolescents and young adults, according to an expert from the global health system <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic,<\/mark><\/strong> to mark <strong>World Cancer Day<\/strong> on <strong>4 February.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Global<\/strong> <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer<\/mark><\/strong> cases in people <strong>under 50<\/strong> <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">rose<\/mark><\/strong> by 79% between 1990 and 2019, according to recent research published by the <strong>University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.<\/strong> The study also shows that <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer<\/mark><\/strong> deaths in this population grew by more than 27%, estimating that more than 1 million people under 50 now die of cancer every year. <strong>Breast, windpipe, lung, bowel and stomach<\/strong> <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancers <\/mark><\/strong>account for most of these <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">deaths.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic<\/mark><\/strong> and other institutes around the world are researching why the incidence of <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer<\/mark><\/strong> in young people is rising significantly, and we believe the cause is multifactorial,&#8221; says Dr.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/staff\/19039-david-liska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Liska<\/a>, a <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">colorectal cancer<\/mark><\/strong> surgeon who leads a <strong>multidisciplinary<\/strong> programme to improve <strong>treatment<\/strong> approaches and outcomes for adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients and patients with early-onset <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer<\/mark><\/strong> at <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"648\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gettyimages-1296627879-fatcamera-1024x648.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8947\" style=\"width:510px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gettyimages-1296627879-fatcamera-1024x648.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gettyimages-1296627879-fatcamera-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gettyimages-1296627879-fatcamera-768x486.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/gettyimages-1296627879-fatcamera.jpg 1190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<strong>Researchers<\/strong> have observed a birth cohort effect, showing that&nbsp;<strong>people born in each decade since the 1950s have a higher incidence of early-onset colorectal <mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer<\/mark> than those born in previous decades.<\/strong>&nbsp;This indicates that shared exposure to certain factors in the environment could be raising their <strong>risk<\/strong>, whether through changes in eating habits, the use of chemicals or any number of other factors. Interestingly, we have found <strong>differences<\/strong> in <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">the gut microbiome, the metabolome and the <\/mark><\/strong>immune <strong>tumour<\/strong> microenvironment between younger and older people with the same types of<strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> cancer<\/mark><\/strong>. Another consideration is that individual risk factors for <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer,<\/mark><\/strong> such as <strong>obesity<\/strong> and a <strong>sedentary lifestyle, <\/strong>are increasingly prevalent in this age group and are therefore likely to be contributing to the problem,&#8221; says Dr. Liska, who is also <strong>director<\/strong> of the <strong>Center for Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer<\/strong> <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">at Cleveland Clinic.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Liska&#8217;s <strong>advice<\/strong> to young people focuses on <strong>prevention,<\/strong> <strong>early diagnosis<\/strong> and <strong>making sure<\/strong> that <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">treatment<\/mark><\/strong> is managed by an <strong>experienced multidisciplinary<\/strong> team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">terms<\/mark><\/strong> of prevention,&nbsp;<strong>we recommend leading a healthy lifestyle, eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol use<\/strong>,&#8221; says Dr. Liska. &#8220;<strong>Early diagnosis<\/strong> is also<strong> important,<\/strong> because the sooner <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer<\/mark><\/strong> is diagnosed and treated, the better the <strong>outcome.<\/strong> People should never ignore persistent symptoms of any kind, but should report them to a doctor. They should also discuss any<strong> family history <\/strong>of <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer<\/mark><\/strong> with their doctor, who can then advise on the best timing and frequency of <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer <\/mark><\/strong>screening and whether they might be candidates for <strong>genetic testing.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to seeking <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">treatment,<\/mark><\/strong> Dr. Liska says a personalised approach is needed for <strong>younger<\/strong> patients, as the <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">biology of their cancers,<\/mark><\/strong> as well as the psychosocial and long-term implications of treatment, are <strong>different<\/strong> compared with <strong>older patient<\/strong> populations.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"824\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Cancer-de-colon.jpg\" alt=\"Colon cancer \" class=\"wp-image-8949\" style=\"width:406px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Cancer-de-colon.jpg 800w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Cancer-de-colon-291x300.jpg 291w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Cancer-de-colon-768x791.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Liska explains that at <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic,<\/mark><\/strong> a broad team of experts works in close <strong>collaboration <\/strong>with <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">oncologists and surgeons<\/mark><\/strong> to make sure all the needs of young patients are met. &#8220;<strong>Younger patients<\/strong> face <strong>unique factors <\/strong>at their stage of <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">life;<\/mark><\/strong> for example, they may want to start a <strong>family,<\/strong> in which case it is <strong>important <\/strong>to see a fertility preservation specialist.
