The findings, published in <strong>eBioMedicine <\/strong>(part of<strong> Lancet Discovery Science)<\/strong>, could lead to new tests or treatments for this segment of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the American Cancer Society, the incidence of and mortality from early-onset colorectal cancer have risen by 1.5% and 1.2% a year, respectively. If this trend continues, a report in the <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Journal of the National Cancer Institute<\/mark><\/strong> estimates that the incidence of colon cancer would double and <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21733-rectal-cancer?_gl=1*6q9b9s*_ga*MTg5OTEzMzMzNi4xNjg3MzgxMjk1*_ga_HWJ092SPKP*MTcwNzkzMTgzNS45My4xLjE3MDc5MzQ2NzAuMC4wLjA.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>rectal cancer<\/strong><\/a> would quadruple in people under 50 by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"709\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Colorrectal-1024x709.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9010\" style=\"width:424px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Colorrectal-1024x709.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Colorrectal-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Colorrectal-768x531.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Colorrectal-1536x1063.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Colorrectal.jpg 1695w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&#8220;The unexplained rise in early-onset colorectal cancer is a major concern,&#8221;<\/mark> said Alok Khorana, M.D., an oncologist at <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cleveland Clinic <\/mark><\/strong>and principal investigator of the study. <mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&#8220;Our team found that bacteria were more abundant and compositionally distinct in the tumours of early-onset patients. These insights help us better understand the causes of the disease and inform new approaches to prevention, diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets.&#8221;<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This retrospective study, <strong>funded by the family of Sondra and Stephen Hardis,<\/strong> used <strong><mark style=\"color:#138c00\" class=\"has-inline-color\">genetic sequencing technology<\/mark><\/strong> to compare tissue samples from 136 patients with early-onset colorectal cancer with those from 140 average-age patients with the disease. They identified unique tumour-related bacteria in the younger sample and found that these patients were more likely to have left-sided, rectal and advanced-stage tumours.
