When men don&#8217;t know the truth about prostate cancer, they don&#8217;t know what to look out for, what to do or who to turn to for advice and help, says urologist David Samadi, a surgeon specialising in prostate cancer.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Misconceptions about<\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> prostate cancer<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> can even determine who survives and who doesn&#8217;t, says the author of the book<\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Hablemos de Hombres.  <\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: Only old men get prostate cancer<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">As the saying goes, live long enough and you&#8217;ll get<\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> prostate cancer<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">. While it is true that the disease occurs <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">mostly in older men<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> <\/mark><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">(65% of the approximately 165,000 cases a year are in men aged sixty-five and over),<\/mark><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> and that the <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">average age<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> of those affected is sixty-six, the fact is that 35% of those diagnosed <\/mark><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">(more than 57,000 men a year)<\/mark><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> are <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">below that age.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">&#8220;Although it is very<\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> unusual in men under forty, <\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">no man under fifty is immune to <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">prostate cancer.<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> Unfortunately, <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">in young men it tends to be more aggressive and lethal,&#8221;<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> warned the specialist.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: Vasectomy causes prostate cancer<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Dr. Samadi,<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> director of the<\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Samadi-Homs-Robotic Institute<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> at <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS),<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> also explains in the book that it was once believed that vasectomy (the surgical procedure to sterilise men so they cannot have more children) increased the risk of <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">prostate cancer, <\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">but science has since disproved this. According to research, men who have had a vasectomy are not at greater risk of developing<\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> prostate cancer,<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> and <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">vasectomies <\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">have no link whatsoever to <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: If I have no symptoms, I don&#8217;t have prostate cancer<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">We all want to believe that having no symptoms is a sure sign of good health. However, because it often has no symptoms, <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">prostate cancer<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> is a deceptive disease, says the <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">urologic oncologist and robotic surgery expert.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Not everyone affected develops symptoms, and the signs can vary between individuals. The urinary symptoms of <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">prostate cancer<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> sometimes resemble those of<\/mark><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong> benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH),<\/strong> <\/mark><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">but to tell them apart, if you have burning or pain when urinating, difficulty urinating or starting and stopping the flow, or more frequent urges to urinate at night, it is <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">necessary to see a urologist.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Other conditions<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> may include urinary incontinence, a weaker or slower urine stream, blood in the urine or semen, erectile dysfunction, and swelling in the legs or pelvic area. Likewise, <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">you should talk to a specialist <\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">if you have numbness, pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips or upper thighs, or bone pain that doesn&#8217;t go away or causes fractures.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: Having sex increases the risk of prostate cancer<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">This belief is completely false. There was a time when frequent ejaculation and <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">prostate cancer <\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">were thought to be linked, but science has debunked this myth and, on the contrary, has shown that men who report frequent ejaculation <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">-twenty-one times a month or more- <\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">appear less likely to develop this type of <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">cancer.<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> It is not clear why frequent ejaculation would have this protective effect, but <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">it is thought that carcinogenic or harmful substances build up in the prostate and are<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">flushed out during ejaculation<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Myth: Prostate cancer treatment always causes urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Dr.<\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Samadi, <\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">who is recognised as one of the leading experts in robotic oncology in the Americas and has performed more than 10,000 surgeries with this technique, says it is true that patients may experience <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">erectile dysfunction<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> and <\/mark><strong><mark style=\"color:#4ab05b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">urinary incontinence<\/mark><\/strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"> after prostate cancer surgery and\/or radiotherapy.
