Lower screening rates often lead to later diagnoses, more advanced cancers and poorer treatment outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers identified <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">&#8220;hotspots&#8221;<\/mark> across the country, representing areas where higher percentages of Hispanic\/Latino residents are associated with lower percentages of colorectal cancer screening. From this information, they developed an <a href=\"https:\/\/spatialepidemiology.github.io\/GWR_screening_HL_groups\/\">interactive online map<\/a> illustrating their findings. It is the first study to carry out a nationwide geographic analysis to identify local priority areas with the aim of increasing colorectal cancer screening in these Hispanic\/Latino communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This approach allows us to identify population areas that could benefit from educational programmes or targeted interventions, taking into account their unique characteristics, such as cultural values and language,&#8221; said the study&#8217;s first author, Blake Buchalter, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Lerner Research Institute. &#8220;The main goal of this research is to identify key areas where targeted efforts could have the greatest impact on improving colorectal cancer screening among Latinos, according to their region or country of origin.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To better understand disparities in colorectal cancer screening at community level, Dr. Buchalter brought together a team of researchers to analyse publicly available screening and census databases in order to determine colorectal cancer screening rates in neighbourhoods across the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interactive map created by the team provides a tool for health authorities, doctors and other stakeholders to guide investment and interventions to increase screening where it is most needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results are broken down by region or country of origin (e.g. Mexico, Puerto Rico, Central or South America, the Dominican Republic and Cuba) as reported to the U.S. Census Bureau.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s important to remember that Latino communities are incredibly diverse in many respects, such as ancestry, culture and health-related behaviours,&#8221; said the study&#8217;s principal investigator and author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lerner.ccf.org\/genomic-medicine\/schmit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stephanie Schmit, Ph.D., M.P.H<\/a>, vice chair of Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Genomic Medicine Institute and interim associate director of Cancer Population Sciences at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. &#8220;It is impossible to act in an informed way without first recognising the diversity and heterogeneity of these communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The factors contributing to screening disparities are not universal,&#8221; explained Dr. Schmit. &#8220;Some people are affected by financial constraints or access to health services, while others may be limited by language barriers or a lack of trust in medical institutions. To better understand those barriers and how to help remove them, we need to identify who is being affected and where.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In the long term, we hope our work will spur the scientific and biomedical community to dig deeper into these priority areas for colorectal cancer screening and understand what the disparities look like on the ground,&#8221; said Dr. Buchalter. &#8220;The goal of this research is to help increase colorectal cancer screening rates in these priority areas, which will not only benefit the people who live there but will also help raise screening rates nationally.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drs.
