A doctor explains how artificial intelligence is helping with the early detection of breast cancer.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cleveland:<\/strong>&nbsp;Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, so early detection is very important. And that could be easier to do with artificial intelligence, sometimes called AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is now being used to help doctors read mammograms. &#8220;It&#8217;s not something the patient can see. It&#8217;s something we see on the detection side,&#8221; explained Dr. Laura Dean, a diagnostic radiology specialist at Cleveland Clinic. &#8220;Basically, we&#8217;re talking about an algorithm or annotations built into the images we see when we review all of the patient&#8217;s images.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Dean said AI can help detect more subtle findings in breast images. Research shows it can also help radiologists be more efficient and accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said another benefit is that artificial intelligence is constantly learning from known or confirmed cancers, and that information can be applied when analysing the images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Dean uses AI in her own practice and said there have been multiple occasions when it has detected something she could not see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think everyone, myself included, tends to be a little sceptical at first when a computer is doing a task. It takes a little time to learn to trust it and to learn how to apply it to our practice,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But I think it&#8217;s really exciting to see how this has helped our breast cancer detection. Of course, we always want to detect breast cancer as early as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to self-checks at home, women are advised to start having annual breast cancer mammograms when they turn 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People at higher risk may need to be screened earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it is always best to talk to your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Cleveland Clinic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>&nbsp;is a nonprofit multispecialty academic medical centre that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education.
