{"id":13053,"date":"2024-10-22T10:16:11","date_gmt":"2024-10-22T14:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/homs-holds-awareness-talk-on-chronic-myeloid-leukaemia\/"},"modified":"2026-09-22T18:07:44","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T22:07:44","slug":"homs-holds-awareness-talk-on-chronic-myeloid-leukaemia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/uncategorized\/homs-holds-awareness-talk-on-chronic-myeloid-leukaemia\/","title":{"rendered":"HOMS holds awareness talk on Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>CML is a type of cancer that starts in the blood stem cells of the bone marrow.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Santiago. <\/strong>The HOMS Foundation ran its awareness programme on Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) to educate people about the importance of preventing this disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main lecture was given by Dr. Liliana Fern\u00e1ndez, who outlined the most important aspects of CML, as well as its diagnosis, treatments and medical advances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dr. Fern\u00e1ndez, many of the signs of CML appear because leukaemia cells crowd out the healthy red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in the bone marrow.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/LEUCEMIA-MIELOIDE-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9990\" style=\"width:504px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/LEUCEMIA-MIELOIDE-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/LEUCEMIA-MIELOIDE-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/LEUCEMIA-MIELOIDE-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/LEUCEMIA-MIELOIDE-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/LEUCEMIA-MIELOIDE-2-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said the prognosis for patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia has improved since BCR::ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) were introduced as initial treatment, so that life expectancy is now close to that of the general population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symptoms of the disease include weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath during basic daily activities, fever, bone pain, unexplained weight loss and a feeling of fullness below the ribs due to an enlarged spleen, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manuel Alejandro Est\u00e9vez, a CML patient at the HOMS Foundation, shared his experience of how he has managed to remain stable and expressed his gratitude for all the support he has received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Est\u00e9vez spoke about his experience since the age of 11, when he was diagnosed with the chronic disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I had chemo, and while I was going through it I felt like I was burning inside. Now I&#8217;m 24 and I lead a stable life thanks to the HOMS specialists. I have two children and I&#8217;m currently working,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the event, Evelyn Dubocq presented the book &#8220;Javier, est\u00e1s sano&#8221; (&#8220;Javier, you&#8217;re healthy&#8221;), inspired by her son.
