{"id":13201,"date":"2026-02-19T16:43:02","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T20:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/timely-diagnosis-drives-better-cancer-survival-rates\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T16:43:02","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T20:43:02","slug":"timely-diagnosis-drives-better-cancer-survival-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/press-room\/timely-diagnosis-drives-better-cancer-survival-rates\/","title":{"rendered":"Timely diagnosis drives better cancer survival rates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Cancer mortality has fallen by 34% since 1991 and five-year survival now reaches 70%, thanks largely to early diagnosis, explains Dr Alberto Pieretti, of Cleveland Clinic.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cleveland.<\/strong> Prevention and regular medical check-ups remain decisive factors in reducing the impact of cancer worldwide, said Dr Alberto Pieretti, a specialist at Cleveland Clinic, noting that advances in early detection and treatment have significantly changed the outlook for the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Pieretti explained that the reduction of risk factors, especially smoking, together with more timely diagnoses and innovative therapies, has allowed cancer mortality to fall by 34 per cent since 1991, preventing more than 4.8 million deaths. He added that five-year survival across all types of cancer now reaches 70 per cent, which confirms that identifying the disease at an early stage considerably increases the chances of successful treatment. Seven out of ten patients, he noted, go on to live five years or more thanks to timely medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a preventive standpoint, the specialist said that adopting healthy habits remains one of the most effective tools for looking after health. Avoiding tobacco, maintaining a suitable weight, exercising regularly, following a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables, protecting yourself from the sun, moderating alcohol consumption and taking up vaccination schemes such as those for human papillomavirus and hepatitis B are among the actions with the greatest impact on reducing cancer risk. He also stressed the importance of taking part in screening programmes according to age and personal history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On early detection, Dr Pieretti said it remains one of the factors with the greatest bearing on survival, since, although treatment of cancer at advanced stages has improved, it is still far more complex than when the disease is localised. He therefore recommended paying attention to persistent signs such as unexplained weight loss, unusual bleeding, prolonged changes in bowel or urinary habits, a chronic cough, the appearance of lumps, changes in the skin and extreme fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Referring to the challenges of accessing timely medical check-ups, the specialist noted that barriers persist related to unequal access to health services, delays in care, financial constraints and a weak culture of prevention. Faced with that picture, he considered it essential to strengthen health education, widen the availability of screening tests and promote screening programmes that are accessible to the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Dr Pieretti called on people not to put off medical visits and to treat prevention as a long-term investment. He noted that many cancers detected early reach survival rates close to or above 90 per cent, and that waiting for symptoms to appear usually means diagnoses at more advanced stages.
