{"id":13225,"date":"2025-11-21T15:31:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T19:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/uncategorized\/a-cleveland-clinic-study-confirms-ketamine-as-a-promising-option-for-treating-chronic-pain\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T15:31:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T19:31:09","slug":"a-cleveland-clinic-study-confirms-ketamine-as-a-promising-option-for-treating-chronic-pain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afcomunicacion.com\/en\/press-room\/a-cleveland-clinic-study-confirms-ketamine-as-a-promising-option-for-treating-chronic-pain\/","title":{"rendered":"A Cleveland Clinic study confirms ketamine as a promising option for treating chronic pain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>A Cleveland Clinic study of more than 1,000 patients concludes that low-dose ketamine infusions are safe and effective against chronic pain.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cleveland. <\/strong>Low-dose ketamine infusions are safe and notably effective in patients with chronic pain, according to one of the largest studies of everyday clinical practice, published today in the medical journal Regional Anesthesia &amp; Pain Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, led by researchers from Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s neurological and primary care institutes, analysed data from more than 1,000 patients, providing crucial evidence for this new therapeutic approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We know that millions of Americans suffer from chronic pain, and this research addresses critical gaps in pain treatment, as well as representing a significant advance in improving care for patients who would otherwise have exhausted every other treatment option,&#8221; said Pavan Tankha, doctor of osteopathy and medical director of Comprehensive Pain Recovery at Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Neurological Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The results of the research represent a significant step towards improving quality of life and may speed up access to this treatment option for patients across the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retrospective study followed 1,034 patients on a standardised ketamine infusion protocol (0.5 mg\/kg over 40 minutes for five consecutive days) and resulted in an adherence rate of 86.1%, which reinforces the possibility of delivering the treatment on an outpatient basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outpatient ketamine protocol proved highly feasible, with more than 90% of patients completing the five days of treatment. Outcomes were measured using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) PROMIS tool, which assesses physical, mental and social health. Patients reported notable improvements in pain symptoms and quality of life. With the ketamine protocol, delivered within a comprehensive clinical pain programme, between 20% and 46% of patients significantly improved their daily functioning, their sleep and their pain control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, 80% of patients returned for repeat infusions, which shows sustained benefit and patient satisfaction with the treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This study provides evidence of ketamine&#8217;s role in treating chronic pain,&#8221; said Hallie Tankha, doctor of clinical psychology at Cleveland Clinic&#8217;s Primary Care Institute and co-investigator on the study. &#8220;That matches my clinical experience as a pain psychologist, since patients often describe ketamine infusions as &#8216;life-changing&#8217;.&#8221; &#8220;I am motivated by treatments that can form part of comprehensive approaches to care, and this study shows that ketamine can be used safely and effectively in pain treatment settings.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients were followed for more than six months, providing long-term evidence of sustained benefits. The data showed improvements lasting up to six months in pain interference, depression and physical function, and almost half of patients showed clinically significant improvement in pain-related anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research showed that low-dose ketamine was safe and had minimal side effects. One example is that hallucinations, the main side effect, were observed on very few occasions. No serious adverse events were reported across the sample analysed. The main advantages of low-dose ketamine are its low risk of tolerance, the feasibility of outpatient administration and the absence of any need for anaesthesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the study&#8217;s authors, this research highlights the importance of building ketamine therapy into a comprehensive pain programme, combining infusions with behavioural therapies and patient education. The findings lay the groundwork for larger controlled trials and for its adoption in multidisciplinary pain centres. The study offers hope to people living with chronic pain who have not responded to conventional treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ketamine is not currently indicated for pain control, which underlines the importance of research like this in supporting Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval and the possibility of wider availability in hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Cleveland Clinic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit multispecialty academic medical centre that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education.
