So says Dr Diego Maldonado, a pulmonology specialist at Cleveland Clinic, who warns that multiple risk factors affect the Latin American population, even those who have never smoked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the specialist, besides smoking there are other elements that considerably increase the likelihood of developing the disease. Among them are prolonged exposure to environmental pollutants, especially in large cities with high levels of fine particles (PM2.5); occupational exposure to asbestos, arsenic, radon and other carcinogens; a family history that might indicate a genetic predisposition; and the prolonged use of wood for cooking without adequate ventilation, mainly in rural areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Maldonado also draws attention to the early signs of the disease which, because they are common in other respiratory conditions, are often ignored or misread. Among them he mentions a persistent cough, often mistaken for bronchitis or respiratory infections; difficulty breathing, which can look like asthma or COPD; chest pain, frequently attributed to muscular or cardiac causes; and coughing up blood (haemoptysis) which, although more specific, can also be linked to lung infections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On medical advances, the specialist highlights technologies that have revolutionised the detection and treatment of lung cancer. Among them, low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), which allows early detection in high-risk patients; and liquid biopsies, which identify genetic mutations associated with cancer through blood tests, with no need for invasive procedures. For treatment, he highlights minimally invasive techniques such as robotic surgery and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), as well as the use of targeted therapies and immunotherapies, which act on specific mutations or strengthen the immune system to fight the cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doctor also notes that the profile of the lung cancer patient has changed, since there are more and more cases in non-smokers, partly because of environmental pollution and exposure to chemical agents. Fine particles (PM2.5) and other pollutants present in large cities are closely linked to the development of chronic respiratory diseases and lung cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the pulmonologist recommends that people with a family history or prolonged exposure to smoke, chemicals or pollution have regular medical check-ups, avoid second-hand smoke, and take preventive measures such as using protective masks in workplaces with dust or chemicals, keeping a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, exercising to strengthen the lungs, and talking to a doctor about early detection tests such as LDCT if they belong to high-risk groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Cleveland Clinic     <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/0YTVCERvnLCWJznPjTNoge0?domain=my.clevelandclinic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a> is a non-profit multispecialty academic medical centre that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education.
