Hábitat Dominicana ended 2021 with more than 5,764 housing solutions

• Since 1986, the organisation has helped more than 188,000 people build housing solutions.

Santo Domingo (February 2022) — In a year still dominated by recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, with the need to revive the economy, rising construction material prices and supply chain disruptions, resilience was the hallmark of the 5,764 housing solutions and more than 28,820 people served by Habitat for Humanity, as well as of the organisation’s volunteers, donors, partners and staff.

Despite the challenges, the non-profit organisation focused on building a world where everyone has a decent place to live helped more Dominicans get new homes in 2021 and kept its programmes running to create value for families, with an emphasis on home repairs and improvements.

With this figure, the Dominican Republic is part of the 1.4 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean who now have a safe and healthy place to rest, according to the Habitat for Humanity International Annual Report.

“While the pandemic has brought uncertainty to much of our lives, one thing that has not wavered is Habitat’s commitment to building a better world through safe, decent and affordable housing,” says Jonathan T.M. Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, who also said “thank you to the donors and volunteers who put Habitat’s mission into practice every day“.

The report, published at www.habitatdominicana.org shows how, through determination and creativity, the organisation helped more than 4.2 million people build or improve the place they call home.

Habitat’s impact was felt in more than 70 countries around the world: 1.1 million people in the Asia-Pacific region, almost 1.6 million people in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, more than 1.4 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean, and more than 30,000 people in the US and Canada.

With this work, more than 39 million people around the world now have a safe home thanks to the efforts of Habitat since its founding in 1976.

Hábitat Dominicana, working shoulder to shoulder, rebuilt, improved and built new homes for Dominicans who lacked the financial resources to secure a decent, healthy home during the current pandemic.

“We want to thank our partners: thanks to their support and the projects we developed together this year, more Dominicans now have a decent home. We also thank our corporate and individual donors who, despite the times, said yes to reaching out to those less fortunate, and every volunteer for their time and dedication, who willingly put God’s love into action by serving,” added Cesarina Fabián, national director of Hábitat Dominicana.
