Digitalising the health system helps generate valuable information

• Digitalising the health system makes it possible to generate valuable information to tackle the rise in chronic diseases and population ageing, explains Fedor Vidal, CEO of Arium Salud Digital.

Santo Domingo. – Countries that have made quantitative and qualitative progress in the health sector are very clear that it is crucial to rely on technology.

The rise in chronic diseases linked to lifestyle and harmful habits, population ageing and a significant increase in longevity, and changing expectations among health consumers regarding access to information are three highly influential trends today, says Fedor Vidal, CEO of Arium Salud Digital, a company that builds tools to digitalise and transform the health sector.

The specialist in digital health says that in the Dominican Republic, beyond being a necessity, the digital transformation of the health sector is a duty to the system and an obligation to the patient.

“Our system cannot keep running manually, with no data sharing, and with inefficient processes and structures that create delays and rework, but above all that produce no information,” said Vidal, who served as head of IT for the international division of what was the hospital ranked number one in the world.

According to Vidal, for a technology company such as Arium Salud Digital working in one of the sectors that lags furthest behind in digital adoption, health, the major challenges have been digital literacy, education, evangelisation and, above all, connecting an entire sector through interoperability.

“It is impossible to separate the evolution of medicine from technological advances. In the last 20 years we have seen the birth of: precision medicine, immunotherapy, genetic testing, telemedicine, wearables, nanotechnology, 3D printing of medicines, organs and medical devices,” explains the CEO of Arium Salud Digital, who has worked on projects implementing technology, infrastructure and quality of care in countries such as Congo, China, India, Brazil, Panama and Jamaica.

As part of digital transformation, he also highlighted artificial intelligence, bots, electronic records, brain mapping, the Internet of Things, evidence-based clinical decision systems, virtual assistants, drones, remote robotic surgery, blockchain and mHealth.

Arium Salud Digital is creating AI-based algorithms and integrating them with electronic health record (EHR) systems. These algorithms can analyse patient data in real time to identify potential health risks, suggest treatment options and improve diagnostic accuracy. They can also streamline clinical coding by automating the assignment of the appropriate medical codes to patient records, reducing errors, ensuring accurate billing and eliminating claim rejections.
