Farmaconal Quirúrgica opens the first minimally invasive surgery simulation room in the Dominican Republic

- Farmaconal Quirúrgica reaffirms its commitment to continuing medical education and innovation with six Pelvic Training simulators to train residents and specialists in surgical techniques.
Santo Domingo, August 2024: – Farmaconal Quirúrgica and Johnson & Johnson opened the Dr. Wady Asbún Innovation Room, a medical education space where training with minimally invasive surgery simulators will be offered to general surgery and gynaecology residents, as well as newly qualified surgeons, to improve their laparoscopic skills.
The Innovation Room is the first in Central America and the Caribbean, offering participants a new way to practise and perfect their surgical techniques. The room is equipped with cutting-edge technology and advanced medical devices to fine-tune laparoscopic procedure techniques.
Zoralla Puello de Asbún, director of Farmaconal Quirúrgica, said the project reflects one of the company’s core values: contributing to education as an ally of the health and wellbeing of Dominicans. “Thanks to Johnson & Johnson, we now have a training space where surgeons can perfect their techniques.”
This free training includes twenty or more hours of teaching, depending on the skills acquired, and is aimed at third- and fourth-year surgery and gynaecology residents (R3 and R4).
“The name honours Dr. Wady Asbún, founder of Farmaconal Quirúrgica and a biochemistry professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), who made education an important pillar of the company. Since then we have developed various continuing education programmes run through our medical management and partner companies,” said Puello de Asbún.
The innovation room is equipped with six laparoscopy simulators, video endoscopy monitors, pelvic simulators with 12 mm and 5 mm ports, laparoscopy cameras and laparoscopic dissection forceps (dissector, grasper, needle holder and scissors) from Ethicon.
It also has training kits for triangulation skills, extracorporeal and intracorporeal knots, endoscopic suturing, dissection, advanced energy forceps and biological material.
