Forward-looking healthcare: robotics is the surgery of the present

• Experts analysed how business in the health sector is evolving at MediTalk Summit 2023.

Santo Domingo, May 2023.- Surgeon Héctor Sánchez Navarro, director of the only Robotic Surgery Center in the Dominican Republic, said that robot-assisted surgery has been a reality for more than two decades.

The laparoscopic, bariatric and robotic surgeon said that change is coming very fast and that adapting to it requires stronger collaboration, whatever one’s role in the health industry.

“Working together has been key for us. For example, obesity is far too common in the population, and it is good that specialists are preparing, because we must provide a better, more global and comprehensive service to patients who are looking for the highest standard,” said the deputy director of Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS).

Dr. Sánchez Navarro identified both teamwork and breaking down paradigms as important parts of providing comprehensive care to each patient, speaking on the panel “CEOs and the great minds of the industry” at MediTalk Summit 2023.

He also said that technology applied to surgery is impressive and robotic surgery is already a reality; in the Dominican Republic, HOMS was the pioneer in robotic surgery, taking on the challenge in 2013 by bringing in this innovation and overcoming scepticism.

Joining the director of Meta Íntegra on the panel, moderated by Eric Moreno, academic director of Barna Management School Health Programmes, were Ernesto Martínez, president of Farmacia Los Hidalgos, and Luis Franco, CEO of Centro Médico Dominico Cubano, who highlighted the need to be adaptable.
