Ministry of Youth and Huawei sign agreement to develop digital skills among young people

- This agreement strengthens the Ministry of Youth’s commitment to the Digital Agenda 2030 and to the Innovation and Digital Development Cabinet as a full member.

Santo Domingo. – With the aim of offering technology training opportunities to Dominican young people, the Ministry of Youth and technology company Huawei signed an agreement within the framework of cooperation between the two.
The agreement, signed by Minister Rafael Jesús Féliz García and Huawei’s CEO in the Dominican Republic, Wang Wei, promotes the use of state-of-the-art technologies and global best practices in the information and communications technology industry.
After the signing, held in the auditorium of the National Institute of Technical Vocational Training (Infotep), Feliz García praised the formalisation of the partnership, saying it will help seal a public-private alliance for the development and promotion of an innovation ecosystem, as set out in article 5 of the National Innovation Policy 2030.
In the same vein, he said: “We are committed to achieving the main objectives of the Ministry of Youth regarding the Action Plans set out in the National Youth Plan 2020-2030 and the Institutional Strategic Plan 2021-2024, as part of the Government Programme of the Dominican Republic 2020-2024, led by President Luis Abinader Corona, driving the priority policies: creating opportunities for young people and moving towards a comprehensive policy of opportunity creation,” said Feliz García during the agreement with Huawei Dominicana.
He added that, through this agreement, the institution he leads undertakes to organise joint research days, seminars and other academic activities, and to identify technology needs so that Huawei Dominicana can provide its learning tools and have them implemented.
Likewise, Wang Wei said they will continue their efforts in ICT to promote the transfer of knowledge to young local talent. “Huawei is committed to the country’s digitalisation and has worked with various ministries and institutions; we sincerely hope to help the Dominican Republic build a more connected society,” he explained.
Huawei, which has operated in the Dominican Republic since November 2009, will continue working to build ICT infrastructure and train ICT talent through initiatives such as the Seeds for the Future programme, said Wang Wei.

At the event, participation certificates were also presented to Dominican students Huan Hao, Amy Guillén, Katherine Rodríguez, Carlos Henríquez, Emily Mena, Brian González, Kamila Rodríguez, Emil Solano, Lorenni María and Carlos Rodríguez, who took part in the “Seeds for the Future” programme in San José, Costa Rica, and who pledged to join efforts to achieve the objectives set out in the agreement.
These efforts by the Ministry of Youth are aligned with the Digital Agenda 2030, the Innovation and Digital Development Cabinet and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

Both the Ministry of Youth and the “Seeds for the Future” project, through the Huawei brand, undertake to design workshops, training sessions and talks on ICT, such as connectivity, the cloud, artificial intelligence, big data, data centre infrastructure, next-generation networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other relevant topics such as clean energy and gender equality in technology, among others.
For its part, Huawei will make its consulting services available to the Ministry of Youth, sharing successful global cases and best practices to strengthen the State’s digital knowledge and experience.
Through its ICT Technology Academies with Huawei HCIA certifications, it will also pass on to students its knowledge of information technology and telecommunications and modern skills through workshops and local and international fairs.
It will also set up Digital Seedbeds in the Dominican Republic, with the aim of training world-class programmers to drive digital transformation and the development of the ecosystem in the Dominican Republic, in line with the National Innovation Policy 2030.
