President Abinader leads groundbreaking of Médico Express San Isidro

• The innovative outpatient health centre, designed to international standards, will have cutting-edge technology and a wide range of health services focused on emergency medicine, prevention and advanced treatments centred on the needs of patients and their families.

Santo Domingo, 10 May 2022 – The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader Corona, broke ground to begin construction of Médico Express, a modern health centre that will provide access to first-world medicine in the municipality of Santo Domingo Este, contributing to technology transfer and improving the quality of life of its population.

In the keynote speech, Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso, executive president of Médico Express, said: “Our vision is to provide high-quality, safe health services for local patients and tourists, supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists and cutting-edge technology.” He noted that “Médico Express’s protocols and design are conceived to international standards, with a personalised, accessible and fast care model”.

Médico Express San Isidro is located in the municipality of Santo Domingo Este, “an area with a limited health offering and major competitive advantages for medical tourism, as many relatives of the Dominican diaspora live there and the area is close to the airport, port and hotels”.

Cambiaso highlighted that the centre will offer a mobile app to book appointments, view results and support continuity of care, with modern software integrating its electronic medical record, imaging and administrative module, committing to the internationalisation, modernisation and digital transformation of the Dominican health sector.

The centre, with a 8,500-square-metre built area, is financially backed by Advanced Asset Management and Lazul Inversiones, with a view to creating 200 direct and 400 indirect jobs.

Felipe Amador, director general of Advanced Asset Management, an investment fund management company, said that “Médico Express’s facilities are made possible by an investment of approximately one billion pesos. This Centre will be a pioneer in the area and the first of a network of health centres of this kind that we plan to back over the next 5 years”.

The executive also said the securities market should play a crucial role in developing sectors such as health and tourism, since “this type of initiative will help create direct and indirect jobs, as well as generating foreign currency, strengthening the national economy and, in turn, competitiveness”.

For his part, Francesco Fino, Commercial Vice-President of Médico Express, said the centre will have cutting-edge local and international teaching and care partnerships supporting research and diagnostic studies, and will accept a wide range of local and international health insurance.

Médico Express will offer an innovative, expanded Urgent Care Centre concept, including adult and paediatric urgent care areas, 14 consulting rooms with the main medical specialties, a modern outpatient operating theatre, clinical laboratory, women’s clinic, dialysis unit, gastroenterology, preventive check-up area, telemedicine, international department and state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging equipment not currently available in the municipality of Santo Domingo Este.

Highlights among the modern equipment include AI-powered magnetic resonance imaging, CT scanning capable of advanced cardiac diagnostics and tomosynthesis, among others.

The head table included the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader Corona; David Collado, Minister of Tourism; José Matos, Vice-Minister of Quality Assurance at the Ministry of Public Health; Alejandro Cambiaso, executive president of Médico Express; Francesco Fino, Commercial Vice-President of Médico Express; Manuel Diez, chairman of the Board of Advanced Asset Management; Felipe Amador, director general of Advanced Asset Management; and Javier Tejada, president of Lazul Inversiones.

Also attending were Manuel Jiménez, mayor of Santo Domingo Este, government health and tourism authorities, presidents of medical societies, representatives of accreditation bodies and international hospitals, and the insurance, financial and business sectors, among others.

Architectural features

The structure of this advanced care centre is designed to meet local licensing criteria and the standards of Joint Commission International (JCI), Fitwel and Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA). It will integrate nature, lighting, and noise and infection control, creating a flexible, sustainable and optimal healing environment designed to have a positive impact on the patient experience.

The design was by architect Kathylka González de Urtecho, CEO of 1a1 Arquitectura, with LEXCO as construction manager and value engineering company.
