Santo Domingo, March 2023: – With the aim of developing initiatives and activities to increase the supply, demand and quality of medical services, attract investors and boost the Dominican Republic’s competitiveness in global markets, the “2nd Health and Wellness Tourism Study and Diagnosis” will be carried out.
Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso, president of the Dominican Health Tourism Association (ADTS), said the study, an initiative of ADTS and AF Comunicación Estratégica, will be conducted by the consultancy Russa García y Asociados.
The renowned expert said that health and wellness tourism in the country has been growing stronger and more specialised, encouraging international accreditations and cutting-edge technologies that will make it possible to offer a distinctive, quality offering capable of competing in the global market.
He also highlighted that the first study, carried out in 2018, was a major step forward for the sector from a marketing and economic standpoint, as it generated investment and actions that strengthened this thriving market niche.
He added that the COVID-19 pandemic showed the tourism sector’s vulnerability to the impact of public health situations, underlining the urgent need for the health and tourism sectors to work together.
Amelia Reyes Mora, president of AF Comunicación Estratégica, said that, considering the post-pandemic effects, the main objective of this analysis is to update the findings of the first publication, which revealed the challenges, progress and great potential for the sustainable development of health and wellness tourism in the Dominican Republic.
Reyes Mora, who is also vice president of ADTS, stressed that this 2nd edition will identify the most in-demand medical specialties and the most important source markets of international patients for the Dominican Republic, and will validate the different profiles of today’s health tourists in their various forms: health tourism, wellness tourism and tourist medicine.
The study process will include meetings, interviews and consultations with key players in the local and international Health Tourism sector value chain, medical and dental centres serving international patients, specialist medical societies, accreditation bodies, international and travel insurers and other related institutions.
The research will also reveal the number of international patients the country receives, revenue from health tourism and tourist medicine, and key factors for defining new strategies and synergies to boost the sector’s development.
The results will be presented at the 6th International Congress on Health and Wellness Tourism on 2 November this year at the JW Marriott Hotel in Santo Domingo.
