Santo Domingo, February 2023: – Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso, president of the Dominican Health Tourism Association (ADTS), and Amelia Reyes Mora, president of AF Comunicación Estratégica, announced the leading medical tourism event in Central America and the Caribbean, the “6th International Congress on Health and Wellness Tourism“, to be held on 1 and 2 November this year at the JW Marriott Hotel in Santo Domingo.
Dr. Alejandro Cambiaso said that, as in previous years, the event will feature major lectures and panels with renowned national and international speakers, aimed at the sector’s main players, such as health centres, dentistry, clinical and pharmaceutical laboratories, hotels, insurers, banks, investment funds, airlines, medical facilitators, government, transport, legal and accreditation bodies, among others.
He also highlighted the growth of health tourism in the country, which generates more than RD$15,000 million a year in the Dominican Republic, becoming an important source of job creation, innovation, investment and foreign currency, which translates into better medicine for all Dominicans and tourists. “That is why activities like this support public-private synergies and the country’s development as a safe tourist destination,” he said.
He also stated that “holding this congress promotes quality, safety and compliance with local standards and international accreditations to strengthen our health indicators and drive the modernisation and digital transformation of the Dominican health sector”.
Amelia Reyes Mora said the event contributes to updating knowledge, integration and business development, as well as positioning health tourism as an activity of national and regional interest.
She added that the country receives approximately 60,000 international patients through health tourism and more than 70,000 tourists who are assisted through tourist medicine, with investment in the sector exceeding US$500 million.
The ADTS vice president also said that “we are at a crucial moment in which new tourist destinations are being developed, so new health and wellness developments must be integrated into this planning to ensure a successful comprehensive vision that drives the development of new market niches such as retiree tourism and wellness tourism”.
The major event, organised by ADTS and the Communication and Public Relations firm AF Comunicación Estratégica, brought together more than 800 participants in its two most recent editions, with around 70 speakers from the Dominican Republic, the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, Spain, Colombia and the Caribbean islands, and more than 110 sponsors, who have become a driving force for continuing to raise the competitiveness of the country’s health and tourism services.
Thanks to the work and efforts of ADTS on behalf of the sector, the country has become the leading destination in the Caribbean region, and through Decree 787-21, President Luis Abinader established a public-private collaboration to give a decisive boost to this thriving industry.
