Santo Domingo, 18 August 2023.- PepsiCo, Inc. (NASDAQ: PEP) reports progress under PepsiCo Positive (pep+), its transformation agenda that puts sustainability and human capital at the centre of its operations. This includes operating four zero-water-consumption food plants in Latin America: two in Mexico, one in Brazil and one in Colombia. Together, these production sites accumulated 550 days without consuming water from local aquifers in 2022. This represents around 15% of PepsiCo’s food production in the region.
In the Dominican Republic, PepsiCo has the largest solar panel park in Latin America. The company launched this project in 2019, supplying 13% of the energy the plant consumes in its first phase, and in its second phase it will cover 37%.
“Latin America marks a before and after for PepsiCo’s global sustainability goals. Our pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) agenda allows us to generate growth while respecting the planet’s environmental limits. The actions we implemented in 2022 are another step on the roadmap we have set ourselves. With the support of partners and allies, we have helped raise the industry standard by creating value for people and the planet,” said Paula Santilli, CEO of PepsiCo Latin America.
PepsiCo published its 2022 Global Environmental, Social and Governance Report (ESG), in which it shares how it uses its brands, the talent of its associates and its scale to advance its ambitious transformation journey. Here are the report’s highlights:
· Sustainable sourcing of ingredients: 99% of the potatoes, as well as 100% of the sugar and palm oil used by PepsiCo, are certified as sustainably grown. This means they meet social and environmental best practices. By 2030, PepsiCo has a global commitment to sustainably source 100% of its key ingredients.
· Zero waste: Its Caribe plant has been considered zero waste since 2020. At the Mixing Center Hispaniola, which began operating in December 2022, more than 18 tonnes of waste have so far been sent for energy recovery.
- The organic substrates generated are used for energy recovery in biogas production together with the company Terralimpia.
- They are currently working on a biodigester project that will produce biogas from all the organic substrates generated at the plant.
- The biogas created will be used to generate electricity for the plant, reducing electricity consumption by 43%.

· Emissions reduction: PepsiCo is carrying out a range of actions that today allow it to lead the way towards a carbon-free future in Latin America. In 2022, the company reduced greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing and transport operations by 27%.[2]
· Collection and post-consumer use of more than 20,000 tonnes of flexible plastic packaging (BOPP) in Mexico, Brazil and Colombia. In Brazil, the company’s second most important market in the region, PepsiCo recovered the equivalent of 100% of the BOPP volume it put on the market.
· Sustainable packaging in the beverage portfolio:
- 88% of packaging is already recyclable, compostable or biodegradable.
- Packaging contains 14% recycled plastic (rPET), equivalent to 1.6 billion 500 ml bottles.
· Diversity and inclusion: After five years of promoting entrepreneurship and employability in eight countries in the region (Dominican Republic, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela), in 2022 the regional goal of the “Women with Purpose” programme was reached: benefiting more than 13,000 women who have successfully entered the labour market.
