Santo Domingo: – Huawei’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Seeds for the Future, has successfully concluded its 2022 edition for Central America and the Caribbean. From the Dominican Republic, 20 students took part, 10 women and 10 men, meaning 50% of the programme’s participants were women, up from 25% the previous year.
The Seeds for the Future 2022 closing ceremony was attended by INDOTEL executive director Julissa Cruz; Innovation Cabinet executive director Bartolomé Pujals; Tony Wang, country manager of Huawei Dominican Republic; Yunessis Sánchez, Public Affairs and Communications manager at Huawei; and Miguel Matos, technical lead at Huawei Cloud.
Tony Wang thanked the young people for joining Seeds for the Future and highlighted how taking part drives participants’ development. “We hope that, as you grow, we can contribute to a better future for our country.”
In her remarks, Julissa Cruz thanked Huawei for being an ally of the Dominican State and told the students they are society’s hope. “Everything we fight for – the country’s digital transformation and economic and social development through the use of technology – you are the ones who will help make it happen. You are a small army of knowledge for the future that will get us to this goal.”
Bartolomé Pujals congratulated the Seeds for the Future semi-finalists, telling them they had just received a set of tools they need to become developers and improve the lives of their families and communities. He stressed: “There is no innovation without creativity; creativity needs people, and you produce it. You are the source of innovation. It is in your hands to be creators and developers rather than just users.”
Yunessis Sánchez, herself a graduate of the Seeds for the Future programme, said this group brings the total number of graduates to 56, and highlighted that Huawei ranks second globally among companies dedicated to research and development, with 54.8% of its employees working in this area.
The programme, which for more than thirteen years has aimed worldwide to develop local talent in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and train university students in the latest advances in the technology industry, also included students from Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Venezuela.
This year, Huawei opened the programme to young people from all university degree programmes, not just those linked to ICT, and extended it to students across Central America and the Caribbean. Over one week, the 139 selected students received virtual technical training, ICT courses, group courses and Chinese culture courses from renowned technology experts, with the aim of inspiring the next generation of leaders through technology.
It also featured a new edition of the Tech4Good project, which encourages students to develop creative and innovation skills using technology as the main tool to help solve the different challenges facing a community, city or country.
The three young winners of Seeds for the Future and the Tech4Good project will have the opportunity to take part in a regional gathering and attend workshops run by the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Panama; finally, the student who stands out as leader for each country will win a trip to Mexico for the Digital Talent Summit 2022 in November this year.
