What to do after a vasectomy?

• Doctors clarify that after the procedure, patients continue to have orgasms and ejaculate.

November 2022. – As November is Men’s Health Month and marks World Vasectomy Day on the 18th, Dr. Wally Abreu, a urologist at the Diabetes, Obesity and Specialties Medical Centre (CEMDOE), offers some advice on the care to take after undergoing this procedure.

He explained that a vasectomy is a male contraceptive method in which the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the penis during ejaculation are cut. It is a simple, quick outpatient procedure, so patients are discharged the same day.

Speaking on the Es Cuestión de Salud podcast from the INTEGRA health ecosystem, Dr. Abreu said that after a vasectomy, two to three days’ rest is recommended before returning to normal activities. To ease discomfort, ice packs and painkillers are also advised.

To dispel a myth, the specialist stressed that patients continue to have orgasms and ejaculate, but without sperm in the semen.

“Patients who have a vasectomy at CEMDOE are generally advised to keep using protection until after at least 21 ejaculations or up to three months, since sperm may remain if they have sex before then. A semen analysis is carried out to confirm azoospermia – the absence of sperm in the ejaculate,” said Abreu.

During the podcast he also explained that a vasectomy can be reversed, but the more years that pass after the procedure, the lower the chances, even with recanalisation; if more than 5 to 10 years have passed, patients will probably be unable to father children again.
