Adopting international technical protocols: a fundamental principle for the digital transformation of the health sector

Santo Domingo, September 2023: To create a more efficient and transparent health ecosystem in which clinics and hospitals increasingly adapt to the needs of a 21st-century patient, certain steps need to be followed, and digital health specialist Fedor Vidal recommends the following:
First, choose quality electronic record systems in the private and public sectors that make it possible to digitalise medical care and administrative processes. This factor is so important that it cannot be put off, he says.
Second, adopt international technical standards and protocols that make it easier for players in the sector to connect, enabling much-needed interoperability.
Third, adapt the regulatory framework to the reality of new technological processes and the adoption of more international protocols, and democratise the provision of medical digitalisation systems transparently, so that the choice of provider is respected and encouraged, explains Vidal, CEO of Arium Salud Digital.
A vision for transformation
To link digital platforms and technology implementations with hospital information systems, personal health records and hospital population management, interoperability is needed in the health sector.
The common thread in this complex framework is achieved with two major components: electronic records capable of interoperating, and international interoperability protocols and languages.
In this regard, Vidal points out: “For effective communication between several people, they must identify and use a method of communication and have a common language or a translator, and digital health systems must follow this same example.”
In a digital world, it is critical for a health tourism patient to connect securely with all the providers and players involved in their care, both in the country they chose for treatment and their providers in their home country.
The expert says that ease of communication between the two is critical and essential for a harmonious and safe relationship.
