Santo Domingo. – Artificial intelligence (AI) significantly advanced personalised, patient-centred medicine in 2024, making complex processes easier, especially in reading medical images such as X-rays and MRI scans, and identifying anomalies that are almost imperceptible to the human eye.
Fedor Vidal, CEO of Arium Salud Digital, has said that AI has had multiple impacts on the health sector, including more effective diagnoses.
He highlights that this tool can be used widely, especially with the creation of algorithms for the early detection of disease, in addition to its major impact on robotic surgery, which has markedly improved the precision and efficiency of surgical procedures.
In the Dominican Republic, there has been a valuable increase in the adoption of new technologies as a gateway to health centres, allowing patients greater accessibility and self-management.
Hospitals are also undergoing a digital transformation, with growing recognition of the importance of technology in clinical and administrative operations.
Vidal mentions, among other things, cybersecurity and patient data protection, key areas where artificial intelligence is used to strengthen defences against cyber threats and guarantee the confidentiality of medical information.
“Another area that continues to develop is virtual assistance, mainly for populations with specific diseases, as does telemedicine, which is evolving into telemedicine 2.0, with fundamental advances in the remote management of patients, especially older people and patients at home. This includes features such as electronic scheduling, automated insurance validation and chatbots for booking appointments and consultations,” says Vidal.

AI and drug development
Another field undergoing a revolution thanks to artificial intelligence is the development of new medicines. These models make it possible to speed up the discovery of therapeutic targets (specific parts of the body, such as proteins or cells, that medicines can target to help treat a disease).
Traditionally, identifying these targets and understanding their role in disease has been a slow and costly process. However, AI can analyse large volumes of genetic, molecular and clinical data to predict which of these parts are most important for a particular disease.
