Alejandro Cambiaso urges UNIBE medicine and dentistry graduates to lead with purpose in the age of AI

• At the UNIBE graduation ceremony, Dr Alejandro Cambiaso encouraged the new doctors and dentists to lead with purpose in a profession transformed by artificial intelligence and telemedicine.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. – Doctor Alejandro Cambiaso, a physician and distinguished graduate of the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), urged the new doctors of medicine and dentistry to lead with purpose during UNIBE’s Sixtieth Ordinary Graduation, held at the Casa San Pablo Auditorium.

In his speech, Dr Cambiaso called on the young professionals to become agents of change in a context marked by artificial intelligence, telemedicine and the rapid transformation of the health sector.

“Today we celebrate the completion of a stage of effort, discipline, sleepless nights and shared dreams. But we also celebrate a beginning: the start of a life of service, growth and purpose,” he said as he opened his remarks.

Addressing the new professionals, he stressed that practising medicine and dentistry goes far beyond technical knowledge:

“Being a doctor or a dentist is not only practising a profession: it is embracing a way of life that demands constant updating and a deep commitment to humanity.”

Leading with purpose in times of artificial intelligence

Cambiaso, who is also executive president of Médico Express and founding president of the Dominican Health Tourism Association (ADTS), stressed that technological advances must serve to humanise care and improve its quality.

“Artificial intelligence is transforming medical practice, telemedicine is bringing borders closer and patients are increasingly aware, informed and demanding. The future of health lies not only in technology, but in how we use it to humanise care, improve quality and make it accessible to everyone,” he said.

In that context, he called on the graduates to take a leading role in transforming the health system: “Today, more than ever, medicine needs leaders who understand that quality is not a protocol but a culture; that innovating is not simply doing something new, but doing it better; and that true success does not consist in shining individually, but in driving collective achievement.”

From the classroom to building stronger health systems

Dr Cambiaso shared how his time at UNIBE shaped his career, allowing him to bring together medicine, management, quality, innovation and health tourism to drive projects that have strengthened the sustainability of the Dominican health system and positioned the country as a regional reference in health and wellbeing.

“UNIBE was a starting point that changed my life. Here I discovered that excellence is not measured only in grades, but in character; that technical knowledge is essential, but that a professional’s worth is measured by their capacity to serve with empathy, innovate with purpose and lead with integrity,” he said.

Speaking about the role of the new graduates, he insisted that the Dominican Republic needs professionals who go beyond the consulting room: “The Dominican Republic needs doctors and dentists with a scientific mind, a human heart and a strategic outlook. Professionals who understand that curing illness is not enough: we have to build systems, raise standards, open paths.”

He also warned about the culture of immediacy driven by social media, inviting young people to develop a long-term view: “Immediacy can make us believe that everything must be fast, visible and perfect, but what is truly great is built with patience, perseverance and purpose. Do not seek only success: seek to transcend. Transcendence is not measured in applause, but in legacy.”

Vocation, resilience and gratitude

In the closing part of his speech, Dr Cambiaso highlighted the importance of resilience in health careers, recalling that there will be days of exhaustion, frustration, criticism and doubt, but that every stumble is an opportunity to learn and grow.

He urged the graduates to celebrate this milestone with gratitude towards their families, teachers and classmates, and always to carry the name of UNIBE high: “Build a career that gives you not only success, but meaning. A professional life that combines science and compassion, vision and service, progress and humanity. The world, and especially our Dominican Republic, needs your talent, your energy and your vision to keep transforming health, tourism and people’s quality of life.”

The message closed with a call for ethical, humanist leadership: “Lead with purpose. Dream big. And never forget that medicine does not only cure bodies: it inspires, it unites and it builds the future.”
