Santo Domingo: Sardines are a food rich in fats, proteins and minerals. In Dominican cooking they are very versatile and are often prepared in locrios, stews, soups, salads, escabeche and baked dishes.

As November is Sardine Month, Paco Fish, the line of canned fish with the highest standards of quality and tradition among Dominicans, is launching its campaign “Saboréalo con Paco Fish” (Savour it with Paco Fish), with the aim of raising awareness and sharing knowledge about healthy food for the whole family to enjoy.
This initiative will include a range of activities for loyal consumers, including recipes posted throughout November so they can bring tasty, healthy dishes to their tables, prepared by renowned Dominican chefs with the variety of Paco Fish products, as well as social media competitions and tastings at various establishments, said Wendy Reyes, marketing manager at Casa Paco.
She highlighted that the wide variety of Paco Fish canned products is endorsed by the Dominican Society of Cardiology, as they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help prevent cardiovascular disease.
Sardines are recommended by specialists because they are nutritious, help prevent cardiovascular disease and strengthen bones thanks to their high calcium content. That is why the delicious and varied Paco Fish menu includes sardines in tomato sauce, in spicy tomato sauce, with coconut, in oil, in water, with corn, with corn and coconut, special for locrio and minced, for everyone to enjoy.
Benefits of eating sardines
As well as the dishes that can be made with them, sardines are an oily fish of great, complete and healthy nutritional value. They help prevent anaemia (low haemoglobin), are low in calories and contain vitamins A, B and D, as well as minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, iodine, iron and magnesium.
They also contain some B vitamins, such as B2, B3, B6 and B12, which help the body use energy nutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins). B6 reduces depression and asthma, and B12 combats stomach problems.
