HOMS holds Patient Safety Day to promote safer care

These activities stem from the hospital’s commitment to continuous improvement in the quality and safety of patient-centred care.
Santiago. The Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) held its Patient Safety Day, a series of activities focused on raising awareness of the practices and protocols designed to prevent medical errors, minimise risks and ensure every patient receives safe, high-quality care.
Dr. Karolin Castillo, HOMS Director of Quality, explained the impact these activities have had.
“These days have significantly improved the safety culture within the hospital, reducing incidents related to medical errors and strengthening compliance with safety protocols. They have also raised staff awareness of the importance of ensuring safer care, as well as of the active role of patients and their families throughout the care process,” said Dr. Castillo.
She added that these practices also improve the quality of the working environment for medical staff.
The activities included a range of actions, such as a talk on patient safety for relatives and visitors in the waiting rooms and a visit to the Nelo Marte School with the talk “I wash my hands for everyone’s health”.
In addition, the seminar “Correct Diagnoses, Safe Patients” was given for health staff, former patients and relatives, and the day closed with a visit from the Metros de Santiago players, who shared unforgettable moments with our brave young inpatients, improving their experience.
The doctor stressed that the patients who benefit most are those who require complex procedures or need recurring hospital services because of their health condition. She also said these days make it possible to act in a coordinated way so that users broaden their knowledge and participation.
Among the challenges HOMS faces in guaranteeing patient safety, Castillo explained that they are “associated with the constant evolution of safety standards in healthcare, which means protocols need to be continuously updated and adapted”.
She highlighted that these days arise from the need to meet international quality and safety standards, and from the hospital’s commitment to continuous improvement in patient care.
