HOMS runs a course in therapeutic endoscopy

- The Centre for Digestive Studies at the Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) ran a theory and practice course in therapeutic endoscopy for final-year gastroenterology residents.
Santiago. The Centre for Digestive Studies at the Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) held its Theory and Practice Course in Therapeutic Endoscopy on 1 and 2 November, aimed at final-year resident doctors from every gastroenterology school in the country.
Dr Brígida Navarro de Sánchez, director of the centre, explained that the fundamental aim of this training is to sharpen the knowledge and technical skills of the next generation of gastroenterologists, based on science and humanism.
The course was directed by Dr Damián Tavares, head of the Biliary Tract and Pancreas Unit at the Centre for Digestive Studies (CED), and featured the notable participation of Dr Carlos Micames, from Puerto Rico, and Dr Fernando Contreras, Dr Sterling Diaz and Dr Carlos Cueto, from Santo Domingo; all of them experts in advanced therapeutic endoscopy.
From the CED, Dr Christie Perelló, Dr Rebeca De León, Dr Mario Peralta, Dr Masiel Rosario and Dr Miguel Contreras also took part.
“These activities take place frequently at HOMS as part of its commitment to continuing medical education, since it is a teaching hospital. In this course the resident doctors were able to carry out polypectomies, management of strictures, variceal banding and treatment of digestive bleeding, among others, on porcine specimens”, explained Dr Navarro.
Finally, the course was run with the collaboration of Fuji Film, the Japanese endoscope manufacturer, and Seminsa, which distributes the equipment in the country, and with the endorsement of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra and the Dominican Society of Gastroenterology. Fuji Film also presented the Mikoto simulator for the first time in Latin America, where the doctors were able to measure their skills in performing colonoscopies.
