HOMS performs high-tech stereotactic radiosurgery

Stereotactic Radiosurgery, or SRS, is carried out in a few sessions and is a treatment rather than a surgical procedure, so the patient is not operated on and does not need general anaesthesia.

Santiago. The Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) performs stereotactic radiosurgery using cutting-edge technology and offers this treatment to all patients in the Cibao region, sparing them an unnecessary journey to Santo Domingo.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) is a treatment technique that concentrates high doses of radiation on a small, precise area of the brain, sparing nearby organs to a very high degree.

The process is carried out in a few sessions and is a treatment rather than a surgical procedure, so the patient is not operated on and does not need general anaesthesia. It is entirely outpatient, and patients can return to their daily activities almost immediately.

“I should point out that when this same type of treatment is delivered outside the brain, it is known as Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy, popularly known as Extracranial Radiosurgery, and the same concepts apply, except for the stereotactic frame, which is not used outside the brain,” explains Dr. Luis Moreno Sánchez, head of the HOMS Radiotherapy Unit, a radiation oncologist and nuclear medicine physician.

According to Dr. Moreno Sánchez, radiosurgery has specific indications and is prescribed for patients who meet the necessary criteria, hence the importance of multidisciplinary medical assessment and management, with the aim of achieving remission of the tumour, local control, or irradiation of the surgical bed where the tumour or lesion is located.

In 2015, HOMS specialists successfully performed the first extracranial radiosurgery procedure using advanced technology at its Cancer Centre. It was performed on a patient with lymph node metastasis from a primary colorectal cancer, using PET-CT and double-contrast CT of the abdomen and pelvis, fusion of both images and subsequent verification before treatment using CT images of the target.
