HOMS reaches a national milestone with cardiovascular prosthesis implant

This procedure provides an alternative to high-risk conventional surgical methods and significantly reduces morbidity and mortality.
Santiago. The Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) continues to set the pace in medical innovation after performing fenestrated aortic endograft surgery for the first time in the Dominican Republic.
Vascular and endovascular surgeon Andrés Marín, who led the successful procedure together with renowned Mexican vascular surgeon Dr. Gabriel Hernández, explains that the procedure is used to repair an aortic aneurysm and involves implanting a prosthesis modified with openings that connect to the visceral arteries, which supply the main organs of the abdomen.
Dr. Marín highlights that the great advantage of this surgery is that patients can walk within hours and leave hospital the day after the operation, compared with open techniques that require long stays in intensive care.
“This is a major advance for the country and for the hospital, which is innovating for the benefit of Dominicans’ health,” he says.
Fenestrated aortic endograft surgery makes it possible to treat complex patients and provides an alternative to high-risk conventional surgical methods. It also significantly reduces morbidity and mortality.
The specialist notes that this surgical technique had not been performed in the country because of its complexity. However, this step shows the level of training of local surgeons to carry out these procedures, demonstrating enormous maturity and placing Dominican vascular medicine on a par with developed countries.
Leaving a mark
HOMS also performed its first transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), led by cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Miguel Carrasco. This is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning it uses smaller incisions than open-heart valve surgery.
Dr. Carrasco, who heads the HOMS Cardiovascular Surgery department, says this advance marks a milestone in the history of local medicine, showcasing the hospital’s cutting-edge technology and offering hope and treatment options for patients with aortic stenosis.
With this, the HOMS Cardiovascular Centre continues to establish itself as a reference centre for treating heart conditions to the highest standards in local and international patients.
